One of the most frustrating things about this industry are the amount of companies that do not respond to job applications, and when you try and contact them they just ghost you. If someone has spent the time to apply for a position at your company, it is only right to give someone a response. I personally would prefer a one line rejection email over a company acting like Casper the Ghost. Hello everyone! This is the first time that I’ve ever posted in here so if I’m going about it wrong please forgive me. I’ve been working in the film industry on big Tv shows for the past 8-9 years in props/set decorations departments. As many of you know, those of us who have been in the industry went without work for almost a year because of the writers strike. I was lucky enough to get on a show this July that will go for about another month but many many other folks are still out of work due to changes in the industry and things just not starting up again. I recently read a facebook post from an incredibly talented first ad asking the public for help with getting employment. This was shocking to me. On a film set, the first ad is the most important and respected person on the set and he is being faced with a problem that we are all having: how do we take the skills from working in the film industry and translate it in a way that convinces someone in the real world to want to hire us? How do we get a real job when the whole point of our job is to be hidden so that the stars can shine bright and the story can ring true? Not many people understand the talent and work that goes into the making of a high budget movie or tv show. How do we prove our talent, dependably, consistency and ability to people hiring when they have no clue what we go through on film sets? Me and many others are ready to get out but we could use some advice. I promise, we will be extremely valuable to you we just don’t know how to communicate that in a resume or employment application. (Fyi, in the film industry you don’t apply or send a resume. A department head hears about you and you get a call from them) Thank you. 🙏

SHOOT YOUR SHOT WITH CONFIDENCE I stumbled on a job ad on X and it has some requirements which I didn’t meet. Those requirements weren’t really necessary for a remote job. So I replied to the job ad with wit using the jargon tailored to the niche, asking for a waiver. Guess what happened next. The company tagged along and asked me to send a DM 😁. I was proud of myself. By the way, sometimes when we come across some offers and we feel disqualified by a few requirements, still shoot your shot. ✅When you’re just seeing an opportunity that closed yesterday, still shoot your shot. ✅When they’re requesting a male/female for that role, and you’re qualified, still shoot harder. ✅When your experience isn’t as much as what they need, shoot further, please. ✅When you know you can deliver, irrespective of what is being demanded. Shoot, shoot, and shoot your shot. Who knows if your shot would hit the goal post? 🤷🏽♀️ Stop making excuses when you’ve not exhausted all your options. Don’t write yourself off, ask for waivers. Each of these companies' revenue streams rests on the eyeballs and the unpaid time, effort, and energy of job seekers. The entire show doesn’t go on without anyone in the theater. No one makes any money, and employers get no new hires. Job applicants are who the whole show is for. But robbing someone of their professional voice while seating them at the theater and then being surprised at how many more movie theaters have 'popped up,' suggests one of a few possible things happening. Only ONE of those reasons is a 'talent shortage,' But you will never hear any other reason if you genuinely believe that silencing an entire stakeholder during the job search process is the only possible way to professionally engage with hiring. #jobs #jobsearch #realtalkjobhunting #transparency #anonymity #crowdsourced

If you're struggling to hire at the moment, you might be making the fundamental mistake before you've even started... ❌ Yes, I'm talking about the absolute basics of getting the right job title. 🤔 Sounds really obvious and usually a job title is linked to some internal structure of a role that already exists and is benchmarked against other team members. But hear me out.... 👂 A film was due to be released in 2006 called "Pacific Flight 121". The leading Hollywood actor criticised it by saying it doesn't reflect what the movie actually is and threatened to leave... 🛫 The name was soon changed to Snakes on a Plane, because it's a film about, snakes. on. a. plane! 🐍 ✈ (guaranteed you quote Samuel L Jackson in your head as you read this) So the lesson is simple, get it right and you attract the best talent.
