✨ Woo newsflash! ✨ I've decided to go on a new adventure and quit my job as Head of UX Research at Nordhealth. It's been a great 2 (and a bit) years in which I got to build the research ops from the ground up, learn a lot about product and company processes and integrated research into the product development cycle to make real impact on the product. While I'm not quite ready to tell you yet what I'll be doing next, I'm very excited for the next step in my career in UX. I am immensely grateful for my colleagues and for the flexibility that allowed me to balance major life events—like becoming a mom 👶 —with a fulfilling career, all while working remotely yet staying closely connected with our team. Big thanks to Hesam Khodabakhshi, Fabio Carneiro, and Teppo Haste—working with you was an absolute blast, our shared vision for how research and design cooperate within product has been amazing to build in the last 2 years. Thank you Dana Iliuciuc & Marie Katharina Hermann for being on my team, trusting in me to lead the research team and for being amazing and fun to work with. Without you, we wouldn't be where the research team is today. And a special shoutout to our amazing brand designer, Mira H., whose insta reels and knitting skills made remote working the best 🧶 While looking forward to this next phase in life, I've come to really appreciate the intricasies of managing business and customer needs, product management, the rise of AI and how to balance it all while working remotely. My new role will shift to hybrid, a big change for me, one that I am excited about to see how hybrid influences the work and collaboration and how my autistic brain will manage the balance between busy office life and quiet home office. I recently attended a workshop on "North Stars" facilitated by Gabriella Campagna Lanning, and it was an enlightening experience. A North Star is essentially an agreed-upon vision that keeps us accountable—it tells us where we need to go without prescribing how to get there. The North Star framework is a powerful tool for setting clear, measurable goals, which is crucial as my team develops solutions to ease the psychological stress on caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. This framework helps ensure our designs are not only innovative but also empathetic and practical. ✅ User-Centric: They keep us focused on the people we're creating for- caregivers for individuals with dementia and Alzheimer's. Our projects always aim to meet user needs, ensuring our work is relevant and impactful. ✅ Built-in Metrics: North Stars include specific metrics, making our goals measurable. This helps us track progress and adjust our strategies as needed, keeping us agile and responsive. ✅ Business Value: By aligning our goals with user outcomes, we ensure that our achievements translate into broader business success. »2021 felt like a gold rush for UX roles, but now, it’s a whole new game.« 🎙️I recently sat down with Katrin Suetterlin for an upcoming episode of UX Heroes to discuss the evolving UX job market. Here’s a glimpse into her journey: Katrin’s career took off during the UX boom of 2021. She received 20 interview invitations within weeks, an experience that left her exhilarated but also exhausted. During this time, she joined WeFox, where she was the sole UX writer, working closely with the CMO and project managers. It was a dynamic, fast-paced environment typical of a Berlin startup. However, the tides soon changed… The funding dried up, and the company had to downsize, leaving Katrin and many others looking for new opportunities. Suddenly, the job market wasn’t as welcoming. The demand for UX roles had decreased, and competition was fiercer than ever. Determined to stay ahead, Katrin embraced versatility and was ocusing on delivering measurable business value. This adaptability led her to a new role at SIXT, where she now works on integrating UX strategies with business goals, ensuring her work has a tangible impact. How do you approach identifying user needs? Crafting a user-centric product starts with truly understanding their needs. I take a multi-pronged approach to achieve this, 1) conduct in depth user interviews to delve into their challenges, aspirations and frustrations, 2) complement this with usability testing to observe real-world interactions and identify pain points. This combination of qualitative and quantitative data would ensure one is on the right track to fulfilling unmet user needs. Early in my career while I was in my undergrad college, I worked on a health tech startup that was working on a health and wellness app. Despite our best efforts, user retention was low. Determined to turn things around, I decided to go beyond standard user surveys and analytics. I spent several weeks in community centers, gyms and local cafes, talking to potential users face-to-face. I listened to their health goals, frustrations with current apps and what they dreamed a perfect app would offer. This immersive approach allowed me to gather deep, qualitative insights that no survey could capture. I discovered that users wanted not just functionality, but also emotional support and a sense of community. Armed with these insights, our team redesigned the app to include features like personalized wellness plans and social interaction tools, leading to a significant increase in user engagement and satisfaction. This experience taught me the power of empathy and direct user interaction in identifying needs. It's not just about data it's about human stories and experiences. By stepping into users' shoes and seeing the world from their perspective, we can create solutions that truly resonate and add value to their lives. How do you approach identifying user needs?
