Excited to share that I will be moderating a panel at the REM conference next week! Our discussion will focus on the latest developments and implications of time and emissions data granularity on market engagement and tracking systems, and I'll be joined by a panel of experts: Farah Mandich from the GSA, Hallie Cramer Carrao from Google, Oluwatobi (Tobi) Adekanye from Microsoft, and Alex Piper from EnergyTag
Too often, environmental science and tech talk past each other. By setting clear definitions and building a common language, we can break the silos and collaborate across disciplines. 🤝
In the recent episode of Environment Variables, join Carlos Pignataro and the host Anne Currie as they discuss how networks can balance energy efficiency with performance and resilience.

Imagine living without electricity. Honestly, I couldn’t. I would be scared out of my wits stumbling around in the darkness, not knowing what’s around me and desperately hoping one of the light switches somehow worked. This could never happen right? No, this scenario could very much be the reality for our children and grandchildren.
Hi, my name is Gary Liu. I’m studying Computer Science and Commerce with a focus on Business Analytics. Over the course of COMM2501: Data Visualisation and Communication, I have had the chance to delve into one of the most urgent national issues – the need to modernise our power grid to ensure a smooth transition to renewable electricity generation.
My data story centers upon the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, focusing on the call toward reliable, sustainable and modern energy. This data story is addressed to the head of the Department of Energy, the Environment, and Climate Change who has the power to modernise our grid and lead the charge toward renewable energy.
Throughout the term, I’ve developed my data visualisation tools using Tableau and Excel, and I’ve come to realise the need for continuous and in-depth research to truly understand my issue. This also goes hand in hand with an open mindset to flexibility and change during the process as I've learnt new contextual knowledge. Realising this made building and adapting upon each stage of my data story a rewarding experience and is something I will take with me throughout my career. I also gained valuable insights on the importance of collaboration and I’m grateful to my peers for their continuous feedback and support during this journey.
The final artifact is something I am proud to present, reflecting the research and analytical skills I have expanded upon through this course. As such, for my self-assessment of my data story, I confidently rate it a 10/10.
Special thanks to Poon Leung and my tutor Jini Gao for their continued guidance during the term, answering the numerous questions I had. Every lecture and tutorial has been a fun interactive learning experience, and I definitely recommend COMM2501 to anyone who wants to learn the art of storytelling through data.
