To transform how your community engages with you and your work, consider listening before you act. In 2019 and 2020, Mission Partners served as the messaging and communications partner for NewsMatch—the largest grassroots fundraising campaign designed to support nonprofit news in the U.S. Through research, collaborative strategizing, and community listening, their fundraising goals exceeded the years prior despite the pandemic and politically charged attacks on the free press. What might your community be trying to tell you that could drive your mission to new heights? 🔹Read more about our work with NewsMatch: https://lnkd.in/eXWx4tAX 🔹Learn more about how Mission Partners can help you build community engagement: https://lnkd.in/e-p458pc

The Solidarity Collaborative’s work will draw from and build upon existing efforts of leaders and organizations at the forefront of solidarity work, offering inspiring examples of what is possible with greater intentionality around and investment in robust solidarity efforts. These examples include a series of cross-community Solidarity Summits, dedicated to fostering and supporting solidarity among social justice communities, where leaders such as Judith Browne Dianis were able to come together and share in their experiences. In our recent case study, Dianis, Executive Director of the Advancement Project, shares about how Solidarity Summits offered the unique opportunity to learn about movement building and resource sharing alongside fellow social justice philanthropic leaders. Check out this approach to building cross-sector partnerships - a critical component of a multi-racial inclusive democracy.
With over 15 years of working with local governments and nonprofits, we have has seen many local nonprofits lead a community’s welcoming efforts. Many of these advocates have built community-wide welcoming infrastructure even when they’ve been unable to engage local government leaders. But to truly reach everyone, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠. With these considerations, Welcoming America hosted “Building a Bigger Table: An Organizing and Advocacy Learning Lab” in 2023 to equip local nonprofit leaders and other champions of welcoming with the advocacy and organizing skills needed to bring local government to the table and work together. Today marks one month since I started with Benefactor Group as a Senior Consultant in the interim services capacity. Here are four reflections I would love to share: 🗓 30 days goes incredibly fast. If you are an organization hiring for a leadership position, allow your new hire to jump in but also give them space to sit with the new. The Bene team has been incredibly thoughtful about this. 🙋♀️ It’s okay to ask for help. I say this from a place of deep compassion for organizational leaders. I have been there. Lean on people to help you. Having a third-party lens is sometimes the hardest to budget for but the best money you will spend. 📚 Knowledge is power. Easier said than done, professional development and keeping your brain sharp is imperative to our sector. “This is how we have always done it” does not work anymore. 🔆 Nonprofits are amazing, and so are the people that work for them. As we begin to dive deep into interim services and what that looks like for nonprofits, we need to take a moment to acknowledge that this is hard work. Sometimes an organization is not the right fit for the people that are hired and sometimes the person isn’t the right fit for the organization. Let’s normalize saying that is okay. If your organization, or someone you know might benefit from interim services— a focus on expanding the capacity of nonprofit organizations through change and talent management, transition planning, and sustaining development infrastructure—I’d love to learn from your experiences and explore how Benefactor Group could help! 📢 Let's Chat! And if you want to know more about “Why I Serve?” (there might be some book recs at the end) read below!
Meet our newest “Bene”, Jenny Bergman, in our latest edition of “Why I Serve.” Jenny reflects on philanthropy, the common good, and how kitchen table gatherings taught her the importance of community and civil engagement. Get to know Jenny today! bit.ly/3UqEkzV

It's interesting to see what happens when you speak out. In this case, it’s an invitation via Tim Eby to join the board at the St. Louis Civic Pride Foundation and the honor that comes with serving. The Foundation is an education non-profit, part of Explore St. Louis, our local convention and tourism bureau. The mission: to energize St. Louisans to support their community. Here’s where I editorialize. This is an example of passion + need = opportunity. I'm passionate and vocal that each of us needs to SHOW UP to improve the cities we live in, for ourselves and the generations to come. And my home town, which has so much potential and resources, also has many challenges. Improving civic pride is one of dozens of things needed to address those challenges. Which leads to opportunty: when someone comes knocking, asking for help, in my experience you find a way to help. Bottom line: just say yes! I’m excited to join my fellow board members, roll up my sleeves and get to work!

What local issues do the nonprofit partners in Spur Local's 2024 Class work to address? Short answer: Everything! Many of these issues are inter-connected. This year's community-based organizations preserve and elevate stories of local history, equip the next generation to be engaged civic leaders, cultivate vibrant regional food systems, and directly provide services and support across our region. Together, they work holistically to make Greater Washington more equitable, reminding us that collaboration strengthens our collective impact. Read on to learn about our issue categories and visit https://lnkd.in/e3XcjUXw to see the full list of nonprofit partners in our new 2024 Class!
