South Africa hit by cyber extortion attacks. Africa, and specifically South Africa, saw a significant increase in cyber extortion — more commonly known as ransomware — attacks between Q2 2023 and Q1 2024. This is according to Cyberdefense senior security researcher Wicus Ross, who said South Africa’s victim count increased by 107% over the period. “For the period analysed, Africa saw the second-highest increase globally as a percentage,” said Ross. He added that attackers may think businesses in Africa’s finance and insurance sectors are likely better positioned to pay their demands. Regarding vulnerability, small and medium businesses in South Africa are likely the most vulnerable to cybercrime, and Ross says businesses will require strong controls in place to protect themselves. These are just a few points mentioned in the article. Point is, we all need to be more vigilant. Business need to up their game, especially small and medium businesses. 🔐 South Africa is Underprepared for Cyber Threats Cybercrime is costing South African businesses up to R360 million per breach, but the true figure could be much higher due to unreported incidents. Despite these alarming numbers, many organizations—and even our government—remain slow to increase cybersecurity budgets. The risks aren’t just financial; they affect supply chains, customer trust, and even national security. What’s at stake? 💡 Our businesses 💡 Our economy 💡 Our military We need stronger reporting frameworks, better funding, and a national strategy to address the growing threat of cybercrime. #CyberSecurity #SouthAfrica #RiskManagement #DigitalTransformation

Can Cybersecurity Training for Microfinance Institutions in Kenya Enhance Resilience Against Digital Threats? Microfinance institutions promise to #empower communities through financial inclusion. They offer security to those #traditionally excluded from formal banking. Yet, for some, digital threats pose significant risks to their #operations. Picture this: A small MFI implementing robust cybersecurity training. Their staff becomes #vigilant, and they #thwart a phishing attack with confidence. Now envision another MFI neglecting cybersecurity measures. A #ransomware attack cripples their system, and panic ensues. It's important to realize that the to paths diverge in the realm of cybersecurity for MFIs. Offering cybersecurity training can lead to: Enhanced resilience, Vulnerability to attacks, and Mixed outcomes. It's now clear that challenges will always exist whether we like it or not. Why Africa ? And why this is relevant for North America as well ? "Criminals Are Testing Their Ransomware Campaigns in Africa" The booming economies of Africa, rich in natural resources and brimming with potential, are attracting not just investors, but also cybercriminals. Transnational criminal networks do test their deployments in valuable markets, before adjusting to new targets. Yet, their TTPs (Techniques, tactics and procedures) are to be learned from in order to adjust our defenses. This is where cyber threat intelligence (or CTI) bring extra insight into threat modeling, more than just analyzing the real time data. Are you staying aware of the threat landscape ? How are you keeping your security posture effective in the long run ? #cybersecurity #CTI https://lnkd.in/e9nV_9wD

While Africa's booming economies are attracting investors, they’re also drawing ransomware gangs looking to exploit the continent's weaker cybersecurity defences. As Funso R., cybersecurity analyst, puts it, “Africa’s potential for profitable attacks amidst its digital growth is a magnet for cybercriminals.” Gal Nakash agrees, stating, “Leveraging less interesting or poorly secured victims is more effective and increases the likelihood of remaining undetected by security tools.” Our recent report, Cyber Warfare: Expert Analysis on Nation-State Attacks, reveals a controversial trend: cybercriminals are treating Africa as a low-risk testing ground before unleashing their full-scale attacks on the rest of the world. Are African nations and businesses being left vulnerable in the global cyber war? It's time for a serious wake-up call. The urgency for finalizing South Africa's Cyber Security Bill has never been greater. At the ITWeb Security Summit 2024 in Johannesburg, experts stressed the need for swift legislative action to combat escalating cyber threats. Jacqueline Fick, CEO of VizStrat Solutions, highlighted that while progress is being made, the process needs to be fast-tracked. Ayanda Peta, CISO of African Rainbow Minerals, emphasized prioritizing resilience, cyber hygiene, and robust legislation. With South Africa ranked 59th globally in cyber security maturity and facing increasing ransomware attacks, a comprehensive legal framework is essential to protect critical infrastructure and enhance national cyber resilience. #Cybersecurity https://lnkd.in/dnrddeQG
