Today is the last day of Disability Pride Month, a month dedicated to celebrating those with disabilities, and highlighting their creativity, resilience and achievements. The Opening Ceremony of the #Olympics in Paris just a few days ago showcased excellent examples of what people living with disabilities are capable of. How wonderful it was to see: ► Paralympians Alexis Hanquinquant, Nantenin Keïta and Marie-Amélie Le Fur, all carrying the Olympic torch; and (of course) ► the incredible Celine Dion, demonstrating superb resilience and courage in not letting her chronic affliction of Stiff Person Syndrome stop her from delivering a stunning rendition of Edith Piaf’s ‘Hymne à l'Amour’, to bring the ceremony to a perfect close. These are all powerful reminders that people who are differently abled are disabled by societal barriers and perceptions, rather than by their own impairment or difference. EVERY point of difference carries value and merits inclusion. Let us all embrace that principle, at work and everywhere else – rather than allowing ourselves to fall victim to the curse of homogeneity and required assimilation that inevitably results when societal or organisational constructs allow exclusion to prevail. #disability #DisabilityPrideMonth #inclusion #InclusionMatters #DEI #DEIB The Inclusion Imperative

Accessibility ≠ just physical access. Inclusion ≠ just meeting legal standards. It’s not the accessible buildings that are needed. It’s the empowerment to navigate life freely. As the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games approach, we're not just preparing for an extraordinary display of athleticism but also for a robust conversation on disability, accessibility, and inclusion. From August 28th to September 8th, while 4,400 athletes compete across 22 sports, an equally important narrative unfolds off the field. In our next episode, we’ll be joined by Andy Barrow, a former Paralympian who has focused on advocacy for disability rights and accessibility. Andy will share his journey from the world of elite sport to becoming a leading voice in the fight for a more inclusive society. We’ll explore the challenges still faced by disabled individuals, the progress made, and the steps we must take to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live, work, and participate fully in society. This isn’t just about the Games – it’s about the ongoing movement for equality and empowerment. Join us for an insightful conversation beyond sport, highlighting the real victories still to be won. Stay tuned! #DisabilityRights #AndyBarrow #Inclusion #AccessibilityForAll #Paris2024 #Empowerment #wayfinding #signage

Meet Dylan Alcott, an exceptional Australian athlete who transcends the boundaries of sports as a wheelchair basketball and tennis player. His remarkable achievements include numerous Grand Slam titles in tennis and gold medals in both basketball and tennis at the Paralympics. Beyond the court, Alcott stands as a motivational speaker and a passionate advocate for disability rights. His quote encourages us to "challenge your unconscious biases, your negative perception, and lift your expectation of what you think people with disabilities can do." In his empowering words, Alcott challenges us to confront our unconscious biases, reshape negative perceptions, and elevate our expectations of what individuals with disabilities can achieve. His wisdom resonates as a beacon, urging us to embrace inclusivity, dismantle barriers, and recognize the boundless potential within each person. Since 2012, the Paralympics has experienced growth, capturing more public attention and pushing for greater representation and inclusion around disability. But are we really seeing progress or is it just surface-level rhetoric? Fuse's Insights & Effectiveness team took a dive into the event’s viewership growth (excluding the unique 2021 'COVID-Games') and looked into the online presence of brands during the Paralympics. Could brands make use of the opportunity by tailoring their campaigns through a Paralympic-specific lens? As we look ahead to LA 2028, it's time to ask if brands are doing enough to to push the discussion around disability onwards in a relevant way. #Paralympics #Inclusion #LA2028

From Australia.... "A 2022-23 AusPlay report found just 19.7 per cent of women with a disability were regularly involved in organised sport. That was compared to 33.1 per cent of non-disabled women and 29.2 per cent of men with a disability. It was a slight decrease from a 2016-17 study which found 21.5 per cent of women with disability participated, along with 35.6 per cent of non-disabled women and 31.4 per cent of disabled men."

While increased broadcasting and sponsorship for Paralympic sports is crucial for disability acceptance in society, actual accessibility practices are often overlooked. Disabled athletes excel in their respective sports, and people with disabilities are active consumers of disabled sports. However, it's essential to ensure that disabled bodies aren't just used as part of an inclusion campaign but that real accessibility is provided. When using disabled bodies as part of your inclusion campaign, ask yourself: Can a person with a disability use my product? Can they access my store independently? Can they shop on my website? Or am I just pandering without making any meaningful changes? https://lnkd.in/gqUcdnBu

It has been a great summer for Untapped working on the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. And although our work there is done, the work to make our world more inclusive for disabled people is far from done. Paris was my sixth Paralympic Games and there was one very striking difference from the other five – the significant ‘inclusion’ of people who work at the pointy end of disability inclusion speaking on panels and represented at events. These are the people who work day in and day out on disability inclusion. It is easy to get swept up in the euphoria of the Paralympic Games, but disability inclusion is not about a moment in time. The reality is that for most disabled people the Paralympic Games has very little direct impact on their everyday lives. Yes, it can be a catalyst for change, but that change is slow and takes a lot of hard work!. This is why we started Untapped. We are fully paid-up life-time members of the Paralympic fan club but we know that the real work happens a long way from the bright lights and the global stage of the Games. So it was great to see Keely Cat-Wells, Sinéad Burke, Dr Shani Dhanda, Victoria Jenkins, Dr Victoria Austin, Catherine Holloway, Iain McKinnon Cara E. Yar Khan, Elodie Draperi, Joanna Liddington, Jennifer Wong Clément Favier and many more on the stage, in the news and at events, involved in important conversations about the work that needs to happen between the Games. Give these people and their organisations a follow, they are moving mountains! 🔥 Social entrepreneur (Inc. Purple Goat) 🧑🦼 Business advisor/NED 💜 Envisioning a fully inclusive world 📚 Writer and content creator
The Purple Collective launched almost three weeks ago now, and the momentum is building! 🚀 With over 100 members already, Philip and I have been combining forces—he's built the tech and ensuring day to day progress, while I’ve brought in campaign partners and share the news on my socials. Together, we're harnessing the collective voice where vital services don't engage with disabled people. This is in synergy with the work we do at Purple Goat with progressive and forward thinking brands who want to embrace disability inclusion. So far, the Collective has led two impactful actions—one with Social Care Futures and another on train travel, addressing the challenges many wheelchair users, like Tanni Grey-Thompson, face on UK railways. We’re now building on the buzz from the Paralympics, which has inspired the world with stories of inclusion. But it’s not just about big events—it's about ensuring that accessibility happens in everyday life too. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we need your ideas and engagement to make lasting change. Help us drive disability inclusion forward by signing up and taking action—quick, impactful tasks that make a difference. Join us today here: https://lnkd.in/e_c2vQ3n Alt Text: A group of athletes in racing wheelchairs are competing in a race, leaning forward intensely as they push their wheels.
