New year resolution - Less texting more speaking! As 2023 drew to a close, it was time for me to reflect on my working practice and to set new goals for 2024. Every year I ask myself the question ‘How can I work more efficiently and effectively?’. I decided to start by tidying my Inbox and mobile messages. Trawling through these was daunting but proved to be a most enlightening exercise. I discovered that very many contained too much text, and either very slow or ignored responses by recipients. So, the amount of time taken in constructing these was a waste of my valuable time. In this age of technology, emails and text messages have become the normal methods of communication but they have disadvantages, as both are impersonal and open to misinterpretation by recipients. Speaking directly with a person is ‘human’, sociable, enables discussion, and from the tonality of the conversation it can be clearly judged if the point of the communication is clearly understood and hopefully welcomed. An immediate decision can then be made as to what, if any further action is to be taken.  So one of my New Year Resolutions for 2024 is that although I will obviously continue to use emails and texting I will use both in moderation and only as ‘ back up’, replacing them  instead with telephone calls! Sharing an interesting post on hiring people with autism. This post and the linked 60 Minutes segment highlight what inclusive hiring could look like, and companies that are actively seeking to hire talented candidates with autism.

I don't need to make eye contact when giving presentation...and here's why! What we are told makes a successful presentation: 👀 Eye contact 🚶♂️ Good posture 🙆♀️ Engaging body language 😃 Smiling and appearing engaged ⏰ A good pace, volume and tone 💬 Getting to the point, no waffle Things autistic people struggle with: 👀 Eye contact. 🚶♂️Regulating posture. 🙆♀️Regulating and reading body language. 😃Regulating and reading facial expressions. ⏰Regulating volume, pace and tone as well as reading tone. 💬Recognising when we are straying from a point. (getting lost in a topic etc) Can you see how presentations, interviews, speeches and what we consider to be an engaging person works directly against autistic people? I saw a job interview description that welcomed disabled applicants and offered them an interview regardless. The interview task? A 5 minute presentation. I know that if I was to go in there as an unmasked autistic person I would appear terrible at giving presentations because of the conventions we have around presentation delivery. I wouldn't get the job. We need to deconstruct these social constructs that we have made up to determine who is successful, who is talented or worthy of a job because in reality, they cater to non disabled neurotypical people and leave everyone else behind. Autistic people have an incredible high unemployment rate. Maybe if we were a little more open minded about was is "correct" and "employable" things would be a little easier for us.

This is why my speaker training is focused on helping each person discover for themselves what their speaking style and process is. There’s no one way of delivering a presentation, or putting a presentation together - as a speaker coach, I shouldn’t be prescriptive. It’s about guiding and empowering people to figure out what works for them!
