Treat Kidney Cancer With Non-Invasive CyberKnife: CyberKnife radiosurgery is a highly effective tool in the treatment of primary and metastatic kidney cancer, also known as Renal Cell carcinoma. Thanks to breakthrough advances in technology, the CyberKnife uses radiation to ablate kidney tumors and stop them from growing. The extremely high doses of radiation target only the tumor while sparing healthy normal tissues. Who Is a Candidate for CyberKnife? Many people who have been told that they are not a candidate for surgery maybe be a candidate for CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiotherapy treatment. We can also treat post-operative patients and metastatic disease. What To Expect from CyberKnife Kidney Cancer Treatment? Most patients can be treated in 1-5 treatments over a period of a few days. The treatment itself is comfortable, and patients can expect little to no side effects after undergoing CyberKnife. What Types of Kidney Tumors Can CyberKnife Treat? Clear Cell Carcinoma (70% of kidney cancers), Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma (10% of kidney cancers), Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma (5% of kidney cancers), and several severe rare types including Duct Renal Cell (very aggressive), Multilocular Cystic Renal Cell (good prognosis), Medullary Carcinoma, renal Mucinous Tubular and Spindle Cell Carcinoma (less than 1% of kidney cancers). There are also unclassified Renal Cell Carcinomas that do not fit any category because they have more than one type and are 3-5% of all kidney cancers and are very aggressive, these require prompt treatment. If you have kidney cancer, it’s critical to understand your treatment options. To find out if you are a candidate for life-saving CyberKnife radiosurgery, call CyberKnife Center of Miami at (800) 204-0455. Preparing for Your CyberKnife Treatment: A Patient’s Guide: The experts at CyberKnife Miami want you to understand how to prepare for CyberKnife radiation treatments. Knowing exactly what will happen before, during and after helps alleviate any fears you may have, and that includes your family members. Here is what Happens: The CyberKnife machine pinpoints radiation directly to the tumor. It can be used to treat patients with prostate, lung, brain, spine, lymph nodes, liver, pancreas, and kidney cancers. It can also be an alternative to surgery, or it can also be used for patients where surgery may not be an option. CyberKnife Miami believes knowing what to expect during treatment calms the mind and body, which keeps stress hormones at bay. Before your treatment, you will meet our team so when you come in for treatments, you will know our names, our faces and that we care. Part of your treatment requires having you undergo scans so we can determine the exact shape, size, and location of your tumor. Some patients require getting fitted for a personal body cradle which keeps your body in the same position during treatment. Then if needed, you're fitted for a special vest that makes sure the CyberKnife robot is synchronized with your natural breathing rhythm. Preparing for Treatment with CyberKnife: Day of Treatment On treatment days, you generally have no restrictions on eating, though you want to stick with light meals. You will also want to be well rested, which we know can be easier said than done. You will want to dress in loose clothing and leave your jewelry at home. CyberKnife treatment is painless. While most people can drive themselves back home or to work after treatment, it is a good idea to have someone with you to drive just in case you do not feel up to it. Preparing for Treatment with CyberKnife: After Your Treatment After treatment, you can likely resume all your normal activities. And while side effects are most often minimum, you may experience some. If you do, call us right away. We are here to help and can recommend medications that can minimize and/or eliminate any side effects. Preparing for Treatment with CyberKnife: The Technology The CyberKnife uses a robotic radiation system along with real-time image guidance to move and bend around a patient “to deliver radiation doses from potentially hundreds of unique beam angles, significantly expanding the possible positions to concentrate radiation to the tumor while minimizing the dose to surrounding healthy tissue,” according to Accuray. With CyberKnife, treatment most often lasts less than 10 days instead of weeks or months with other forms of radiation. The first off spring of Cyberknife the race horse that won two major races was sold at auction for $230,000. The filly’s father, was named Cyberknife by his owner, Al Gold to help spread the word about the technology after being successfully treated for prostate cancer with CyberKnife radiation therapy. “When I was first told I had cancer, fear overtook all logical thought. Will I survive, what kind of treatment will I have, what about my family? Learning about the CyberKnife System gave me hope for my future. CyberKnife was a simple, pain-free treatment that enabled me to continue enjoying my life. Grateful to the successful treatment, I named my most promising horse Cyberknife.” After winning the Haskell Stakes and Matt Winn Stakes Cyberknife was retired as a stud horse. It is hoped his off spring will go on to win many races and continue to educate the world about CyberKnife technology. The CyberKnife System features a linear accelerator mounted to a robotic arm that is specifically designed to deliver radiation beams from potentially thousands of unique angles, targeting only the tumor while minimizing radiation dose to healthy tissue. It is this precision, made possible by the system’s robotic arm and continual tracking and automatic synchronization of the radiation beam, which makes such a difference for patients. The CyberKnife System is the only radiation delivery device that can detect when the prostate moves and using artificial intelligence, synchronize the treatment delivery beam to the prostate’s new position in real-time throughout the entire treatment session. Dr. Mark Pomper, CyberKnife Miami's medical director says CyberKnife has a 98% cure rate for prostate cancer. “There is a general thought among surgeons that surgery is better for men under age 60 because of radiation’s long-term effects may cause problems years later, like impotence and incontinence, but that’s not what research is proving. Surgery has long term effects too. CyberKnife has few side effects. Its pinpoint radiation beams hit only the prostate so we can give a much higher dose with a lot fewer treatments, leaving healthy surrounding tissue unharmed. There’s over 20 years of published studies supporting the effectiveness and safety of CyberKnife for prostate cancer,” CyberKnife treatments can be done in five radiation therapy sessions over 10 days. That is compared to up to forty-two over several months with other types of radiation. The CyberKnife radiation beams, which target and destroy the tumor, are so precise. That means there is less risk of side effects including impotence and incontinence. Why So Passionate About The CyberKnife® System? “This is a question I am often asked. As a representative of Accuray who makes two incredible systems that treat cancer in remarkably unique ways, why does it seem as if you prefer one system over the other?” Bill Vogel/Clinical Sales Director/Accuray/CybKnife Manufacturer Well, the short answer to that question is, I really do not. However, it was my experience as a Radiation Therapist that led me to Accuray, and my experience with CyberKnife. I treated cases that, in my opinion, could only be described as miracles. One case was an exceptionally large man who at the time was wheelchair bound and had a lesion that was wrapped completely around his spinal cord and encompassed two vertebral bodies. He was in extreme pain and lost the function of his legs and was told by a Radiation Oncologist there was not much else that could be done at this point other than attempt to control the pain with medication. As we spoke, he told me he was taking everything from ibuprofen to oxycontin, along with several other let us say “unprescribed” medications and it helped a little but impacted his quality of life being drugged up every waking hour of the day. This was the typical story I ran into in those early days. But I recall him specifically because he had a massive frame and I dislocated my shoulder getting him up on the CyberKnife table. His treatment went on without incident. Two and a half weeks later I was walking down a long hospital hallway when, at the other end I noticed a rather large man standing there. Normally he would not have caught my eye, but the way he was slowly pacing from one side to the other made me think he may have been lost, so I wanted to see if I could help. As I got closer, to my amazement, I realized it was my patient from a couple of weeks ago. The first thing that went through my head was that his follow up was not scheduled for at least another ten days, so why was he here? Did he have other issues that needed to be addressed, but even more was the elation that he was standing. As I approached him his face lit up as he finally recognized someone to whom he could speak. He told me he came in early because he wanted to let someone know his pain was gone. He felt he no longer needed to be taking drugs and had at least stopped self-medicating with the “unprescribed” ones. After two and a half weeks his pain was completely gone, and he was walking again. So, back to the original question. No, I am not biased towards one of our incredible treatment delivery systems, but I do wear my heart on my sleeve. As a result, when I begin to speak of CyberKnife a little smile begins to form as I think back about this patient and the countless others that were able extend their time and improve their quality of life after being told they were out of options. https://lnkd.in/g95TcyP7 Accuray CyberKnife Center of Miami "The Beam of Life"

Drug Improves Effectiveness of Radiation for Lung Cancer That Has Spread to the Brain: Researchers have identified a potential new way to make radiation more effective and improve outcomes for patients with lung cancer that has spread to the brain. The study, led by Dr. Debanjan Bhattacharya was published in the journal Cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Up to 40% of lung cancer patients develop brain metastases and on average survive between eight and 10 months. Bhattacharya and his colleagues at UC focused on AM-101, a synthetic analog, meaning it has a close resemblance to the original compound, in the class of benzodiazepine drugs. AM-101 is a particularly useful drug in the context of brain metastases in NSCLC, Bhattacharya said, as benzodiazepines are known to be able to pass through the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain from potential harmful invaders that can also block some drugs from reaching their target in the brain. The team found AM-101 activated GABA(A) receptors located in the NSCLC cells and lung cancer brain metastatic cells. This activation triggers the “self-eating” process of autophagy where the cell recycles and degrades unwanted cellular parts. Specifically, the study showed that activating GABA(A) receptors increases the expression and clustering of GABARAP and Nix (an autophagy receptor), which boosts the autophagy process in lung cancer cells. This enhanced “self-eating” process of autophagy makes lung cancer cells more sensitive to radiation treatment. Using animal models of lung cancer brain metastases, the team found AM-101 makes radiation treatment more effective and significantly improves survival. Additionally, the drug was found to slow down the growth of the primary NSCLC cells and brain metastases. In addition to making radiation more effective, adding AM-101 to radiation treatments could allow for lower radiation doses, which could reduce side effects and toxicity for patients, Bhattacharya said.
