Anyone who has worked on cognitive systems knows the dilemma: you cannot understand intelligence all at once, so we try to cut it down into smaller pieces . But when you work on one of those pieces (such as knowledge representation), you realize that it is connected to many other pieces (like perception, learning, communication). I think AI is neglecting an interesting approach to overcome this dilemma. What if we used the only form of intelligence we know about, i.e. human intelligence, to fill in the missing parts that we cannot handle yet? This is how I indirectly study dynamics in knowledge representation with todoListo: One issue I have had with AI research for quite a while is that it stubbornly ignores the fact that the world is dynamic, and therefore thinking is a dynamic process. For example ontologies. Their structure seems to reflect something about human knowledge representation, but they lack a crucial part: they are not made to be changed. Sometimes ontologies get changed, e.g. if some form of "learning" takes places, but that is usually rather an addition, not a fundamental rebuilt. I think AI (i.e. classical AI, were representations were still considered valuable) has spent too much effort on figuring out representation formalims and too little on how they change. But then, engineering-wise changing data structures, possibly with circular dependencies when they get updated, are no fun. And we don't know a lot about how exactly the structures should change. So my personal approach is to build software that uses formalisms from AI, but leaves the dynamics to the user. todoListo offers different types of tags or classification mechanisms and the user interface is built in a way that they can be changed very quickly. So users can construct a kind of abstract model about their tasks on the to-do list and they can change this model, somehow similar to how they change the knowledge representation in their brain. Of course, the mechanisms of todoListo are not powerful enough to represent the full range of human thought. And they don't have to. But it is a start and gives me an opportunity to observe how I change those structures much better than I can observe how the structures in my brain change. This "experiment" is rather limited with a population size of one, since I do not observe other todoListo users clandestinely, of course. But it would be easy to set up a field study with todoListo to get more data.
