The 2024 CyberOhio Summit was a day of engaging discussions and invaluable insights into the future of cybersecurity in Ohio. I had the opportunity to connect with The Honorable Frank LaRose and Kirk Herath, two leaders who are making a significant impact in this space. Frank’s role as the moderator for the critical infrastructure panel was a highlight of the day. The session brought together experts like Kimberly Jones, Kristin Lowery, Richard Maier, and Greg Niese to discuss strategies for protecting essential systems and addressing evolving threats. Their combined expertise and practical approaches provided attendees with actionable insights that will drive progress across industries. Kirk’s leadership as CyberOhio Chairman and Cybersecurity Strategic Advisor was evident throughout the event. His efforts to foster collaboration between government, industry, and academia are instrumental in strengthening Ohio’s cyber capabilities. The summit reinforced the importance of collective effort in tackling cybersecurity challenges. The Cyber Leadership Series is out, and what a fantastic session it was with (JC) Jean-Christophe Gaillard, Founder and CEO of Corix Partners, a London-based Boutique Management Consultancy Firm focused on Cyber Security Strategy, Organisation, and Governance challenges. In our discussion, we explore his latest book, The Cybersecurity Spiral of Failure - and How to Break Out of It. JC believes many CISOs have simply remained technologists and firefighters, trapped in an increasingly obsolete mindset, pushing bottom-up tools, risk-based and tech-driven narratives, disconnected from what the board wants: resilience and execution. The first step in this evolution is for the board to view cybersecurity as a business problem, not a technology problem. He refutes the idea that board members lack the necessary skills and adds that the hard reality is that the approaches most have been pushing for twenty years have not worked.
