I am thrilled to share my latest article published in the Journal of Strategic Studies: "The Weakest Link: The Vulnerability of U.S. and Allied Global Information Networks in the Nuclear Age." 50 free copies here: https://lnkd.in/eAqShSuT I explore how the arrival of the nuclear age highlighted the inadequacy of U.S. and allied information networks for transmitting defense and intelligence data across the globe. Submarine cables could be cut and radio easily jammed. In these circumstances, U.S. officials looked to emerging space technologies to compensate for the inadequacies of radio and submarine cables. But satellites were also vulnerable and insufficient for meeting all communications requirements. Consequently, creating layered telecommunications networks that stretched from under the sea, across the land, and into space emerged as the optimal strategy for strengthening information security. Bottom line: the information network infrastructure that enables U.S. global power projection is simultaneously one of its greatest vulnerabilities.

'The Department of Defense and National Nuclear Security Administration have a new supercomputing system focused on biological defense at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Inaugurated on August 1, the system will “provide unique capabilities for large-scale simulation and AI-based modeling for a variety of defensive activities, including bio surveillance, threat characterization, advanced materials development and accelerated medical countermeasures,” per a readout from DOD spokesperson Robert L. Ditchey II. China's latest non-nuclear #submarine, the Type-039C Yuan Class, features a distinctive angled sail. We can now be confident that this is part of a sonar stealth technology. Other countries are also pursuing this general technique, but China is the first to field it. The size of the stealth feature on Chinese #submarines suggest that it is intended to work against medium frequency sonars. It will be less effective against lower frequency sonars which have long wavelengths. But those only tell the enemy that something is there, not what it is. They will also be less effective against short wavelength sonars such as those on a torpedo. Wow, DTRA has awarded a huge one! Pool one is technology-oriented and cuts across such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and software development. Pool two's focus is on operations and countermeasures in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear environments. Pool three is mostly about targeting, information operations and irregular warfare. Awardees will compete for task orders to support in DTRA’s mission of reducing and eliminating incentives for U.S. adversaries to develop and possess their own weapons of mass destruction. DTRA also lists the threats as potentially originating from fragile or failed states.

My thoughts on #Russia's development of a #nuclear weapons based anti-satellite (ASAT) capability with King's College London'S Freeman Air and Space Institute. If Moscow actually deploys this capability it will immediately shred Article IV of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, completely undermining the Treaty as a whole, and destroying the key basis for legal approaches to the space domain. If Moscow actually uses this capability once deployed in orbit, it would devastate the Low Earth Orbit space environment through intense gamma radiation and 'Van Allen attacks' on an indiscriminate basis. In turn that would cause massive disruption to western democracies that are increasingly depending on space-based critical information infrastructure for effective functioning, social stability and economic growth. Its an old tech but with much greater utility now in the 21st Century - if Moscow is actually willing to deploy it and use it. https://lnkd.in/gEyWAyWi

Unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), previously known as unidentified flying objects (UFOs), are real physical objects that have been seen around the world for decades. They are a global phenomenon. Many governments have conducted UAP investigations and disclosed significant military and civilian encounters with them. UAP are advanced technological objects that have registered on calibrated military instrumentation that include radar, infrared, electro-optical, and weapon seekers. There are numerous incidents where UAP have been reported near nuclear weapons technology and capabilities. Furthermore, there is legitimate reason to conjecture that in the near future, the US government will publicly disclose that a technologically advanced non-human intelligence (NHI) is responsible for UAP and engaging with humanity and the planet. We refer to this as “UAP disclosure.” Indeed, credible testimony from US Navy pilots and former high-ranking US government officials, along with recent legislation on UAP enacted through defence spending bills, strongly suggests that the US government is already in the process of disclosing information about UAP. The UAP subject clearly holds enormous public interest. If UAP prove not to be designed by human beings, then we are dealing with unprecedented issues of existential consequence for humanity. We would have to acknowledge the existence and terrestrial presence of a technologically advanced non-human intelligence. Humanity would enter a new paradigm of greater significance than even the Copernican Revolution. If there is verified information about NHI, it should not be the sole preserve of governments. Humanity has a moral right to know. Furthermore, concealing information of this magnitude is not a viable long-term solution, as it is likely to be revealed eventually. If this happens abruptly and in an uncontrolled manner, it could lead to significant societal disruption. Good afternoon. Lawmakers expressed vigilance over the revelation that Russia is seeking to launch a nuclear capable satellite weapon. Nuclear capability in this context would be used to launch a weapon to target satellites. Lawmakers are gravely concerned about the impact such a weapon could have on #nationalsecurity. #analysis In power discussions attended by #OvertOperator over the past two months, in particular the Space Power Conference and the Space Mobility Conference, both of which took place in Orlando, Florida, defense professionals and Space Force military personnel note that near peer competitors are significantly increasing their Space Power capabilities. In power race snapshots given by US Space Force Intelligence Analyst Ron Lerch, and other Space Force personnel, the Force members noted that China is leading the foreign adversary race, and explained that Russia faces some bottlenecks in budget and operations to its own Space ambitions due to the war in Ukraine. Overt Operator's analysis is that, while leading near peer competitors and adversaries such as China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran may have Space capabilities, there are also bottlenecks to procedures that can slow the advance of adversarial threats in the Space theater.
