New data from PeopleForBikes finds that England is lagging behind Europe for how cycling-friendly its towns and cities are. England received an average city score of 59 out of 100, compared with an average European city score of 71 when England is excluded. “The uptake of cycling in cities is directly connected to government priorities. When government leaders invest in making cycling more accessible and appealing, more people choose cycling for everyday transportation,” PeopleForBikes President and CEO Jenn Dice told Zag Daily. “If more cities in England make similar long-term commitments to invest in cycling, they will gradually catch up to their European peers.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7ttCK9p

Cycling data, released by Cycling Scotland shows that cycling in various locations across Scotland is up by 30% this summer compared to last summer – a great result! And a number of these locations are where there has been significant investment in safer cycling infrastructure in recent years. This highlights how important the development of good cycling routes is, if we are to encourage people to choose using a bike over getting in their car. Through our People and Place Plan and associated grant fund, we’re supporting active travel behaviour change projects across the south east of Scotland, many of which are cycling related. Great to read about the Dutch research highlighting that there is essentially no political polarization in cycling behavior in the Netherlands: "No matter if one is green, liberal, Christian, or populist, we see a strong mainstream culture of cycling, even across political affiliations." My team (Zoe Hall, Gregory Hamlet, Erik Kim, Yujeong Seo) is conducting a study about cycling in cities 🏙️ and the problems cyclists face in their day to day lives.
