Introducing Angus Lugsdin, Co-Founder & Director of Salcombe Distilling Company, and this week’s #IndustryInspiration ! ✨ Angus’s passion for the gin category was ignited during his time learning to distil at the iconic Springbank Distillery under the watchful eye of industry legend, Frank Mchardy. As a result, Angus partnered up with long-time friend, Howard Davies and Salcombe Distilling Company was born. Over the last 10 years, the dynamic duo have seen the business grow from a small local gin brand into brand with a well-established national and growing international presence. Speaking on his love for the industry, Angus shares, “I love that despite the challenges of the last few years the consumer relishes the opportunity to visit quality hospitality venues, and the sector is constantly evolving. It is our job to delight and surprise customers and I still get a buzz when I visit a venue, where the service and quality surpasses all expectations, something that we strive to do ourselves.” The future looks bright for Angus as he shares his goals, “The short term is to continue to introduce more people to our brand and products, building brand awareness and brand equity. There is nothing more satisfying than hearing your brand name called or hearing others talk positively about a ‘Salcombe & Tonic’ or a cocktail made with our gins. “Long term, we plan to expand into select overseas markets with a focus on premium coastal sites that have a similar vibe to Salcombe.” Delving into what, in his opinion, makes an exceptional hospitality professional, Angus explains, “A smile and an ability to listen. When I first started in sales in my twenties, my mentor at the time always said you have one mouth and two ears and you should use them in that ratio. That has stuck with me ever since. I think the best hospitality professionals are always positive and enthusiastic, even when perhaps below the surface they are padding like crazy. I also think it is a skill to learn to read your audience or room and adapt. You want the customer to leave as a mini-ambassador for your brand or venue.” To conclude, Angus advises, “There is always more to learn and ways to improve. Always work on the assumption that someone in the room knows more than you do, but also learn to celebrate the wins, however small they are. I would also say that practice makes perfect and if you aren’t a little nervous ahead of a service, then perhaps you aren’t as committed as you need to be. A nervous edge keeps you on your toes, remaining attentive to deliver the best quality service.”

🤑 £4.56m in Lost Revenue!!! ⚫ Our survey of independent UK bars, has revealed a staggering £1.9 million worth of old and open gin bottles is going to waste on Britain's back bars. ⚫ 30% of UK bars are left with old, unused, and open gin bottles and shockingly, one in 10 venues reported having at least 20 leftover bottles of stock languishing in their cellars or back bars. ⚫ This makes the average revenue loss per venue from post-gin boom stock a huge £775, amounting to a nationwide total of £4.56m in lost revenue! 🔄 This is why we're launching The Big Gin Swap.
