Sustained public-private partnerships across all technology-readiness levels are paramount for preserving Europe’s semiconductor competitiveness. European initiatives like Horizon Europe and the Chips Joint Undertaking play a pivotal role in enhancing collaboration between industry and research institutions. ESIA urges decision-makers from the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission to prioritise early industry engagement in shaping future EU initiatives, including the Tenth Framework Programme (FP10) to further foster innovation.

🇪🇺 All eyes are on the EU's new leadership. To help guide their thinking on tech policy, Fourtold's Tech Lead, Patrick Grady, has published a policy brief in collaboration with Victor De Decker from the EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations. 4 tips for policymakers looking to lead on chips: 📈 Leverage strengths: It is unrealistic for any company, country – or even the entire EU – to sustain each layer of the chip supply chain. The EU must focus on its comparative advantages. 👩🔬 Attract talent: The semiconductors skills shortage is becoming a void. Policymakers must properly incentivise young people to thrill in the semiconductor sector. 🤝 Facilitate private-public dialogue: The EU should establish a formal consultation platform between the semiconductor industry and policymakers. The U.S. State Department intends to partner with the Government of Kenya to explore opportunities to grow and diversify the global semiconductor ecosystem, specifically in the assembly, testing and packaging sector, under the International Technology Security and Innovation Fund, created by the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 Link:https://lnkd.in/gvunJ__q Accordingly, the U.S. State Department is working with Congress to commit $1 million in foreign assistance to promote resilient semiconductors supply chains, build secure and trusted ICT ecosystems, and complement U.S. domestic manufacturing capacity.  This would make Kenya the first country in Africa to benefit from funding through the CHIPS and Science Act. ➽ The First Plant for the Production of Multi-Component Semiconductor and Silicon Photonic Microchips to Be Established in Armenia The Ministry of High Technology Industry of the Republic of Armenia, the company Levi Semiconductor, and Enterprise Armenia have signed a memorandum of cooperation with the aim of establishing the first plant in Armenia engaged in the pure production of multi-component semiconductor and silicon photonic/optical microchips. "This cooperation highlights the effectiveness of our strategies for promoting investments and our commitment to positioning Armenia as a competitive player in the global semiconductor industry. SVRI has been very active in China. So some thoughts about the Chinese Semiconductor industry. As usual, as much counter of what is usually posted here as possible . So don’t hesitate to shoot it down 😋: 1) No, the Chinese industry doesn’t steal IP right and left. They have bought technologies, companies, IP for $billions: YMTC from Spansion, CXMT from Qimonda, Naura from Akrion. And “we” approved these deals, happy to cash in 2) Sure, they acquire their competitors products and study them (have seen few examples in clean rooms) but that’s industry standard. And in most cases, that’s because they will customize for their customers instead of using their own designs 3) The Chinese companies we know have survived brutal domestic competition, they were not offered market shares 4) They are very concerned by how they are perceived internationally, they will bend over backwards to be respected as solid partners 5) Their factories are Industry 4.0 ahead of the industry average ; the ones SVRI interact with have well above customer services 6) They innovate rapidly, and in many cases their innovations are copied and adopted.
