When it comes to cancer, there can't be thoughts about "my team" or "your team." It is critical that we work together to connect with our communities to address disparities. #cancer #cancerawareness #communityengagement #communityoutreach

On this day of remembrance, we are reminded of Dr. King's profound words about the importance of addressing disparities in healthcare. Yet nearly 60 years later, Black women in America have a 40% greater chance of dying from breast cancer than White women, and Black men are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer than White men (American Cancer Society). As we pause today to remember the rich contributions of Dr. King, we also reflect on ways in which his legacy can be used to eliminate the disparity in cancer care that so disturbingly affects the underrepresented in our nation today. The Society for Integrative Oncology strives for a world where access to quality person-centered care is a right, not a privilege. We invite you to stand with us in the fight against injustice in healthcare. Together, let’s work towards a future where everyone, regardless of circumstance, has equal opportunities for healing and support. #MLKDay #HealthcareJustice #CancerEquality #SIO #SIO HEIB Committee #Integrative Oncology

Please read this story. The strength, the courage and the relentless positivity is truly remarkable. Those who have worked with me or follow my work, know the relationship I have with Joe and his incredible life story to date... If you have met Joe you will know he is always smiling, always bringing positive energy to others - this is how he lives his life. "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain". This is something I have watched Joe do for years, dance in the rain. He is having to do it again and he will do, I am already watching him do it. I believe two things that really matter in your life are your values and your attitude. What do you stand for and how do you show up? People like Joe remind me of this every day and I don't know about you but I need the reminders too - I think most of us do. So while this is a tough story to read, I am hoping for an inspirational outcome. I want to play an active part in that outcome and I would love for you to do the same, if you can. Here are 3 ways you can do that: 1. Follow Joe and and send him love and support while he climbs this mountain - he feels this and feeds off it. 2. Make a donation to Joe's GoFundMe page to help them raise the funds to fight this and make a difference > https://lnkd.in/ezq-SKaQ 3. I have been thinking of ways I can help Joe on his mission and you might be able to help too - I am creating a special keynote presentation capturing many of the powerful lessons from his story and all the proceeds will go towards his GoFundMe campaign. If you belong to a company who bring in speakers or you have an event coming up and are interested, please contact me to discuss. Carpe Diem ❤️

Why do people procrastinate to pull together their life plan, to be ready for unplanned life transitions? I don't know the answer but it is my mission to improve this situation. On the other hand, it is refreshing to see cancer patient that are going through life-changing events totally engaged in pulling their plans together, seeking to learn how to put a complete plan in place. At every quarterly workshop at the Ottawa Cancer Hub, I am amazed of the open conversations, positive attitude of these people that are going through difficult life events and transitions. Very pleasant and gratifying. Looking forward to the next one. #lifeplanning #estateplanning #advocacyInAging #OttawaCancerHub #OttawaCancerFoundation #lifetransitions #unplannedlifetransitions #cancersurvivor #advancecareplanning #healthcaredirectives

“Are you going to do another cancer thing?” My 11-year-old asked me this question last night as I prepared for my morning flight. Yep, I’m doing another “cancer thing.” Six months ago, when I started seriously pursing answers to my questions regarding the lack of long term studies of proton therapy radiation recipients, it initiated a causal pathway I did not foresee. As a recipient of experimental treatment fifteen years out, I have a personal interest in long term cancer survivor studies. What good is an experiment if you don’t study all of the results? As I spoke with the physicians who had treated me, and the phrase “lack of funds” came up, I knew I wanted to take action as a survivor to help move the needle forward, but I didn’t know how. So I just started using what I had: my voice. Talking about my experience and pursuing answers to my questions quickly led to beautiful new friendships, a part-time job with a survivor organization I am proud to be a part of, and a scholarship-supported journey to Washington, DC to advocate for long term survivor studies and resources with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. Maybe you feel inspired to influence your culture or your sphere in some way, or maybe you have lingering curiosity about how something could be different or better. This is how discoveries are made. This is how change begins. So, use your voice. Ask questions, listen, and then ask some more. You never know where your questions may lead. #CPAT24 #CapitolHill #CancerAdvocacy
