Happy Feast of Ss. Cyprian and Cornelius! Since at least the mid-6th century, the Roman Church has kept St. Cyprian's feast jointly with Pope St. Cornelius, who was martyred five years before him. On Leadership: Pope Francis’ decision this week to allow Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples comes just one day after the Church of England under Archbishop Justin Welby offered its first blessing of same-sex couples. This is a historic move for these faith institutions in making God’s grace available to everyone. This is also a story of fortitude and conviction as both leaders compel their churches to engage the world as it is. 🔹 Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin are experiencing fallout from some within the Catholic Church and Global Anglican Communion, respectively. 🔹 Pope Francis’ message in his October 29, 2023 Synod mass preceding the Vatican’s announcement was that God’s love cannot be confined “to our own agenda.” God’s love is for everyone. No exceptions. Watching these two leaders at work over the past several years, and how they have shown up for each other, may this also be a story of human fraternity. As you close out 2023 and contemplate how you will take on 2024, I wish for you the gift of human fraternity. 🔸 It is through showing up for others that we find understanding and strength to do the hard and meaningful things. Here is Archbishop Justin on knowing Pope Francis:
