The initial outcome of #COPUOS2024 initiative; "Incentives for companies to employ sustainable solutions," is poised to significantly advance #sustainable practices in outer space. Throughout history, human endeavors have been driven by two pivotal elements: #Motive and #Incentive. These factors crucially influence our determination and progress toward achieving desired goals 🎯. By advocating for the incentivization of companies that adopt ♻️sustainable solutions, this initiative will fundamentally transform our approach to utilizing outer space, steering it towards the greater good of humanity.

ITU Space Sustainability Forum 2024 - Day 1 - "The Space Ecosystem is undergoing a profound transformation, with private and public sectors boosting several novel activities valuable on Earth, such as accelerating broadband connectivity, monitoring our planet and travelling to the Moon and beyond. This acceleration towards a new space-dependent era is reflected in the increasing number of regulatory filings for satellites systems operating in low-earth orbit, as well as innovative space exploration missions and systems operating on and around the Moon. With this promising future emerging now, it is timely to bring purposeful effort, both collective and individual, to ensure the sensible and sustainable use of space resources. The Forum will convene top leaders and subject matter experts from the satellite and space industries, space and telecom agencies, governments and other space stakeholders that are committed to the responsible use of the space. The Forum is designed as an opportunity to present, discuss and dive deeply into the policies, best practices, guidelines and strategies to ensure space remains accessible and sustainable for the future space activities envisioned today and in the future. In June 2024, the signing ceremony of the Zero Debris Charter marked a commitment by the European Space Agency - ESA to work towards making human space activity 'net debris zero' by 2030. 𝐈𝐒𝐑𝐎 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐅𝐎 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐊𝐎𝐂𝐇𝐈, 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐀𝐘 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India, S Somanath unveiled the carbon reduction initiative of SFO Technologies, the flagship company of the NeST Group on Saturday. Besides planting a sapling at the NeST Hitek Park to mark the occasion, he also unveiled a replica of Chandrayaan at the campus highlighting the cooperation of SFO Technologies and ISRO. Mr. Somanath interacted with the NeST engineers and management team.  The Carbon Reduction initiative of the NeST Group is in tune with the United Nations’ objective of achieving a 50 percent reduction by 2035 and zero emissions by 2040. While addressing the gathering, he said that the Indian space industry is offering a tremendous opportunity for the private sector in the country as a new area of growth and development. The government of India envisages the space industry in the country to 9–10-billion-dollar industry in the next 5-10 years from the current levels of 2 billion dollars. He also said that 400 private sector companies have benefited from the technology developed by ISRO for its various missions and companies like SFO Technologies are well positioned to take further advantage of the new policy initiatives in the space sector by the government of India. SFO Technologies has close association with ISRO for many years. The two have worked in multiple programs such as the RF sub-systems for Chandrayaan and Aditya Missions, manufacturing of Antenna Systems, and Cryogenic Engine Control Systems for launch vehicles. NeST Group Chairman N Jehangir said discussions are on with ISRO for various projects including the Gaganyaan project aiming to carry human beings to space for the first time through the Indian Space Mission. SFO Technologies and NeST Group are committed to protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions. The impact of climate change is very evident in everyday life. Countries such as the UN, the European Union, and the US have imposed mandatory restrictions on carbon emissions and are currently encouraging companies to reduce emissions, said Althaf Jehangir, CEO and Executive Director, SFO Technologies, Hardware and Manufacturing. He also said that they have signed agreements with multiple partners to create a model of being a socially responsible organization by minimizing carbon pollution. The Space Sustainability Paradox is a situation in which the increased use of space to support sustainable development leads to heightened adverse impacts on both the space and Earth's environment. Thereby the more that the space sector implements space applications and technologies aimed at positively contributing towards sustainable development challenges for the benefit of humankind, the less sustainable the space sector becomes. This point is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows the ongoing imbalance between these two areas as exemplified by an emphasis being placed upon sustainability from space over sustainability of space. Key to the space sustainability paradox is the theory that the space sector has a tipping point. Tipping points represent a critical threshold that, when crossed, leads to large and often irreversible changes to the Earth system which drive it into a new state However, it is important to note one nuance to the space sustainability paradox – that being that whilst all space activities contribute to sustainability of space, not all space activities will necessarily contribute to sustainability from space. In this regard, whilst many space activities do not necessarily have sustainability objectives, they will still have an impact on the space and/or terrestrial environment. As the space sector continues to grow and mutate, these types of space activities could become a significant driver of the environmental impact of the industry. For this reason, it is important that the sustainability credentials of these activities are still quantified. Moreover, as will be further discussed in the following section, another key factor to the space sustainability paradox is unintended consequences of missions and policies that target a specific aspect of space sustainability, which often lead to adverse impacts. https://lnkd.in/eA5DJud8
