It's #WATONDAY, a day created by IALA not too long ago. 🌊 Did you know that not all lighthouses serve the same purpose? Wikipedia describes lighthouses as navigational aids for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. However, some have a unique history, like the one in this video. Built in 1909, this lighthouse was a publicity stunt to promote Goulet champagne. It would light up at night, illuminating the surrounding vineyards. 🌟 I discovered this one during my last holiday in the Champagne region of France, Verzenay. Time flies when you're Flying Fish 🐟: it's our 5th anniversary! 🎂 But how did we go from idea to company five years ago? To get an idea of that history, let’s explore the journey of Gijsbert van Marrewijk, one of our co-founders, and his vision for the maritime sector. ⚓ As a child, Gijsbert was captivated by space exploration and technology in general. His passion led him to study Aerospace Engineering and Space Systems Engineering in Delft, where he learned to design complex systems for harsh environments. This expertise turned out to translate well to the challenges of today's maritime industry. In 2013 while taking part in the TU Delft Solar Boat Team, Gijsbert and his future colleagues Gerben Schonebaum and Johan Schonebaum imagined applying their hydrofoil technology to fast boats to make them much more efficient. This idea was further developed in 2018 at a YES!Delft course, where they met Olivier Prakken, an experienced entrepreneur. With their combined skills and vision, they co-founded Flying Fish at the start of 2019. At the same time, the co-founders also got in touch with their first partner, Watertaxi Rotterdam. We asked Gijsbert to share his insights on the future challenges for the maritime industry: ‘Personally, I see that a tremendous amount of work needs to be done to bring the entire maritime sector to zero emissions in the period from 2030 to 2050. Almost all shipping currently runs on fossil fuels, and the technology to become sustainable requires smart combinations of energy saving and switching to other energy carriers. At the same time, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere continues to rise, and the climate is rapidly becoming more extreme. So, the urgency keeps increasing for drastic innovations in the maritime industry.' Today, Flying Fish contributes to solving these challenges with a team of 12 smart, creative, and enthusiastic engineers. To keep the team creative and motivated, Gijsbert and the other co-founders encourage initiatives like the monthly 'FlyMiPro,' where the team works on personal projects from Lego water taxis to workshop experiments, and lunch presentations for sharing stories and project updates. Together, the Flying Fish team members are committed to contribute to zero-emission solutions in the maritime sector.
