The Harsh Truth About Job Applications in the AEC Sector Last few month, I applied for several positions, including Draftsman, Revit Modeler, and Junior BIM Engineer, across different AEC firms. While I didn’t want to write this, I feel the need to share my experience with the hiring process in our industry. Here’s what I observed: 1. Lack of Communication: Many HR professionals fail to take their responsibilities seriously. One of the most basic expectations from a hiring team is communication. However, candidates are often left in the dark about their application status. If you’re not selected for the next round, you deserve an email. It’s a matter of respect for the time and effort you’ve put into the process. 2. Unprofessional Handling of Interviews: Companies often schedule tests or interviews through Google Meet links or other platforms. But some hiring teams forget about these meetings and only realize it last minute. The worst part? They casually reschedule, citing “emergencies,” from Monday to Thursday, disrupting the candidate’s schedule. In one instance, I received an email with clear instructions to prepare for a test and join 10 minutes before the scheduled time. I even received a reminder email from the company. Yet, when the time came, no one joined the meeting. I waited for 20 minutes, feeling utterly disrespected. The Problem The root issue lies in the lack of seriousness among hiring teams. HR departments are not just hiring candidates; they are selecting the future of their company. Yet, many fail to recognize the importance of their role in creating a positive candidate experience. The Solution Companies need to invest in building competent and accountable hiring teams. A few steps to address this would be: Clear and consistent communication: Notify candidates of their status, whether selected or rejected. Punctuality and professionalism: Respect candidates’ time by sticking to schedules and being prepared for meetings. Accountability: Understand that the hiring process reflects the company’s values and work culture. A bad experience can tarnish a company’s reputation among potential employees. To all HR professionals and decision-makers: Your role is not just about filling vacancies; it’s about building a future for your organization. Candidates aren’t just applicants—they could be your next big asset. Treat them with the respect and professionalism they deserve. Let’s raise the bar for hiring in the AEC sector. It’s time for a change. Cadeploy Techflow Engineers The School Designs Studio Techture MaRS BIM Solutions, as design atelier, Structures Online

The biggest inefficiency in AEC Industry? ‘Shared Resources’ Projects are becoming complex these days, still we are working with this business model is quite unproductive as well as it is skyrocketing the reworks and costs. When client asks, how much time it will take? Answer is usually next week or 15 days and designers start working on it 2 days before deadline. Alarming situation, developers and promoters really need to take this seriously, shall pay better to designers/consultants. 1 Designer working on 7-8 projects leading to : 1. Lack of quality drawings 2. Missing information 3. Lack of coordination 4. Lack of collaboration 5. Delayed responses/actions This is hampering project timelines and cost. Solution? Dedicated team members ! So that individual can really focus and deliver great results ! 1. Creating project case studies 2. Faster coordination 3. Assessing the risks earlier 4. Searching for better solutions 5. Optimization Investing in dedicated and productive team members is the need of an hour. Despite global digitalization, the construction industry in Ukraine remains one of the least digitized sectors. Most of the data generated today is the result of manual processing. Paper-based project documentation, various logs, reports, and other standardized documents are the "paper norm". Currently, there are legislative initiatives underway to adopt BIM technologies at the state level for projects with a consequence class of CC3. However, it is important to note that implementing BIM technologies requires high standards for data storage and structuring, from naming files, systems, and sections to the classification of elements within the model. The first few aspects have many international examples that our specialists in Ukraine are gradually adopting. However, when it comes to classification, particularly the classification of works, services, and primary construction products and materials for use in BIM models, there is no unified reference or classifier widely used in the construction market. In my opinion, one of the reasons for the low level of digitalization is the absence of unified classifiers for materials and services. To take the next step in implementing digital technologies, it is necessary to develop a unified classifier that will help standardize work with construction services and materials in the industry. During a recent webinar I conducted for Autodesk, we thoroughly discussed BIM HELP`s approaches to automating the calculation of work volumes and material quantities from BIM projects. We also demonstrated how classification helps address the challenges of accumulating, storing, and sorting project and construction data. A big thank you to Dmytro Mukhin for the invitation and event organization, as well as for your active stance in developing the Ukrainian-speaking Autodesk forum.
