Corruption remains a serious driver of political instability in Ecuador, however the country has experienced progress in the areas of human rights, transparency, and governance through participation in the Open Government Partnership.    During the American Bar Association International Law Section’s annual conference on May 10, we will participate in a panel to discuss Ecuador's advances within the #OGP framework. Continuing the series on constitutional reform, let’s touch on another big area—government structure and accountability. The goal? To make sure our government is working efficiently and is held accountable to the people. Here’s what’s being suggested: -->Separation of Powers: There’s a proposal to limit the number of ministers drawn from Parliament. This would create a clearer line between the Executive and Legislature, making sure they check each other instead of overlapping. -->Smaller, More Focused Cabinet: By capping the number of ministries and ministers, we could streamline decision-making and avoid unnecessary overlap. -->Stronger Anti-Corruption Measures: This is huge—there’s a push for tougher anti-corruption measures. Independent bodies would have the power to investigate and hold officials accountable, ensuring that transparency and honesty are at the heart of our government. -->Term Limits for Leaders: Setting term limits for key positions like the Prime Minister would keep leadership fresh and prevent power from being concentrated in one person for too long. These reforms are all about creating a government that’s transparent, efficient, and responsible to its people.
