Match3 is not the best game economy. I know some who would say it’s not even economy! Also, digital board games are just video games with terrible UX. Listen to the episode for more on these hot takes from me and the fellas.
The crew convenes to square off on....what counts as a store of value? Is Match3 the best game economy of all time? Is progression a wage rate? Will Christopher Kaczmarczyk-Smith buy digital Gloomhaven? Was Eric Guan among the five people who watched Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire? Will Phillip Black get the crew on a regular posting schedule? #LeadershipTales I had some chats recently that reminded me of what good leadership is about... ...now dont go to sleep on me...listen up! A hugely important quality of a good leader is - you gotta be there. Be there even if its scary or painful or unpleasant. Don't go hidin' somewhere. I had a CEO once (now sadly passed away from a horrible illness) who told me he'd join me in a contentious meeting with the big national union of our industry. He didn't have to, but he was there. Meeting didn't go well, the union literally walked out of the meeting and the union leader told us he'd fight to stop us or else the industry would follow our example. I don't even remember the details of that issue anymore...but I remember my boss stood with me. He was once in the millitary and literally led his troops under fire...so this wasn't a surprising act on his side. Another great CEO kept putting himself and his direct reports in front of our staff whenever we had any big, especially controversial, things to discuss. Once we had a meeting with hundreds of staff from the customer service section, and literally all the questions were about HR stuff - policies, terms, benefits and perks, claims of unfairness from HR or their bosses etc. It wasn't a pleasant meeting for me as the HR head, especially since I'd just joined and the shit they were bitching about weren't my shit. But regardless, I was the HR head, and the problems automatically became my problems when I came on board. I'd either have to fight for the issues, or against the issues, but couldn't say they're not my problem because I'm new here. Two years later, at the same meeting (which we held regularly) , not a single HR issue came out. All the issues were about processes and products and competition and strategy and technology etc. It's totally another interesting story altogether again how my boss led the company's transformation. The issues we faced were either solved or sorted out or abolished, or in some cases we told the staff sorry but we wont change, and gave reasons. The boss didn't allow any of the C-suite to hide. We had to be there, and take the good with the bad. I have seen and heard of so many leaders who hide behind memos or emails or announcements or videos or worse, behind their subordinates, when the shit hits the fan. (I've heard jokes about one leader who's only heard when an employee passes away and the company writes an email announcement about it...) To me this makes them poor leaders, the kind the company, and the employees, don't deserve. Shame on them. If they had wanted to hide, they should have joined a witness protection programme. Anyway, here's to a celebration of the day of the workers, and a celebration of the leaders who lead from the front too.
