Starting a business? You need 1 Million Cups.
7 years ago, I started attending my local chapter of the entrepreneurial community called 1 Million Cups. It was a gift. I still recall the feedback I got after my first presentation: “you just talked for 6 minutes, but I still don’t know what you do.” It was the honest perspective I wasn’t getting anywhere else.
I would come and go over the years, meeting great people and learning from them.
2 years ago I stepped in as lead organizer. Something awesome started happening when I showed up every week, asked others for help, and kept refining and testing my own business models on stage.
Now, I find that what we hope will happen to every attendee is happening to me: business is taking off and I have to step away from regular attendance.
1 Million Cups is a community that will help you grow if you let it. It’s not a place to find clients or customers. It’s a place to find perspective and ideas.
Check it out. There’s free coffee.
I get your words out. With careful editing and the right kinds of writing, we'll create something polished--an RFP bid, website content, the book that'll boom your business.
It's that time again! Our second quarter is coming to a close, and we have some thank-yous and mid-year reflections for you.
A great coach can transform a sports organization, just like a great business owner can transform a company. Pete Carroll transformed The Seattle Seahawks.
14 years ago, my beloved Seahawks needed a change at head coach but no one expected bringing in a college coach from the hated USC Trojans. Not to mention some of the rumblings of NCAA violations...
Pete came in and said this is going to be a players first organization that empowers the players to be themselves in order to get the most out of them on the field. He bucked the trend of conventional player/coach relationships, and it worked.
As a business owner, you have to decide what your management strategy is going to be. Are you going to choose a conventional way of management or create your own blended management style? From there, how are you going to evolve that style as industries and people change?
I think staying true to your authentic self as a manager is the best way to build rapport and trust with a team, and even clients. Trying to force a different communication style because you've "read" it's the right way to do it can easily come off as disingenuous.
If I ever have a run at a company, like the run Pete Carroll had in Seattle, you can sign me up for that right now.
Thanks, Pete.

Another Labor Day has passed and it is important to understand the deeper purpose behind it. Labor isn’t merely about what we do—it's about the service we provide and the positive impact we create in the world. 🌍
When we approach our work as an act of service, we offer more than just our time and skills. We contribute to something greater than ourselves. Whether you’re solving complex problems, caring for others, or building something new, your work has the power to shape lives and communities.
Take the following examples for instance:
- Teachers don’t just impart knowledge; they shape the future by inspiring and guiding the next generation. Each lesson they deliver is a step toward a brighter tomorrow. 📚
- Healthcare Workers do more than provide medical care—they offer hope and comfort in times of need, making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families. 🩺
- Entrepreneurs aren’t just building businesses; they’re creating opportunities, driving innovation, and contributing to economic growth that benefits society as a whole. 🚀
Now let’s take the a level and reflect on a Parable, shall we?
In a town long ago, three stonecutters were asked what they were doing. The first said, “I’m cutting stones.” The second replied, “I’m building a wall.” But the third looked up with pride and said, “I’m constructing a cathedral that will stand for generations.”
The third stonecutter understood that his labor was not just about the task at hand, but about contributing to something lasting and meaningful. His work was a service to the future, a legacy that would inspire and endure.
Now, how do you Infuse Purpose into Your Work:
1. See the Bigger Picture: Understand how your daily tasks contribute to a larger purpose. This mindset can transform routine work into something deeply meaningful.
2. Lead with Impact: Consider how your work serves others. Whether it’s your team, customers, or community, focus on the positive impact you’re creating.
3. Create a Lasting Legacy: Think about the legacy you want your work to leave behind. Align your efforts with that vision to ensure your labor has a lasting impact.
Which is your Call to Action?
As this Labor Day passes by, take time to reflect on how you can bring more purpose and joy into your work.
Ask yourself: How does my labor positively impact those around me? How can I serve others through what I do?
Let this reflection guide you in making every task an opportunity to contribute to something greater. Your work is more than just a job—it’s a gift, a legacy that leaves a lasting positive change in the world, truly making it a brighter place 🙏🏼✨

May you remember your time is precious, it is a gift, and how you spend it matters. Most people live their lives unfulfilled because of their jobs. We are all given the gift of life to live out your soul's purpose, to impact others and be a part of something bigger. It is your obligation to align with what that is. If this is an area of your life where you feel stuck, I encourage you to read these wise words from one of the greatest leaders of our time, Tony Robbins.
