This is rewarding in so many ways. Making new friends, helping others get started in the #sheep business, supporting true #sustainable #farming, specifically advancing #agrivoltaics & more. As the world expands #agrisolar, you can expect to see properties off #solar revitalized with the ecological & economic benefits that come from the opportunities provided through working the land again. Everyone talks about the “back to the land” movements of the past but this one has real potential to stick for many people. Imagine a landscape dotted by operations that take advantage of #colocation & outward ripple effects. Get used to seeing sheep in more places! #GraysLAMBscaping #KitchenSinkFarm
The girls have arrived!!! Friday was a momentous day in our regenerative farming and agrivoltaics journey. Thanks to Jess Gray and her family we are proud owners of a starter flock of 25 🐑. These girls will be rotationally grazed on our land (eventually under solar) to help build our soil health and soil carbon and their male offspring will provide grass fed and finished Hallal lamb for the Muslim community around DC. Jess and her husband Marcus generously took the time to show us rookies how to set up our electric fence and provided a lot of great advice and wisdom as we get started. If chickens are the gateway farm animal we are really ranching now ;) #rotationalgrazing #agrivoltaics #solargrazing #sheepfarming

Good soil health underpins wider ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, water quality regulation, and flood regulation. Improving soil health through sustainable soil management has multiple positive environmental and societal benefits whilst supporting productive agriculture.
95% of the food we eat comes from soil. We can’t live without it. 🌾 Meet Duncan Ellis, a third-generation farmer who loves to grow "worm food". By swapping single monoculture for more varied cover crops, he's growing pest-free food while supporting soil and wildlife to thrive. Duncan’s work is playing a vital role in the Seaford to Eastbourne Nature Recovery Project which is helping to grow the Nature Recovery Network to increase and restore nature. Soil and land health are a big focus for Tanka Fund’s Buffalo rancher partners, who are constantly working to restore and sustainably manage their land for the benefit of their herds. In response, two staff members from our Climate Smart program were trained recently in certified rangeland and agricultural monitoring. “We are working to offer these capabilities as a permanent tool to all of our rancher partners,” said Dawn Sherman, executive director. “Our goal is for Tanka Fund’s rancher partners to have access to the most current data about the health of their own land.” 🦬 #TankaFund #BuffaloConservation #SupportNativeRanchers #WildlifePreservation #ProtectTheBuffalo #SustainableRanching #NativeAmericanHeritage #EcoFriendlyFarming #BuffaloFencingProject #ConservationEfforts #WildlifeProtection #SupportIndigenousCommunities #BuffaloRestoration #DonateForACause #WildlifeSupport #CulturalPreservation #IndigenousLandManagement #HelpSaveTheBuffalo #BuffaloHeritage #SustainableAgriculture #LandsLivesEconomies #Buffalo #Bison #TheReturn #NativeAmerican #ClimateRestoration #CommunityEmpowerment #EnvironmentalSustainability #BuffaloRanching #TankaImpact

Should we convert grasslands to cropland? 🌾 Apart from most areas not being suitable for crops, there is another concern: The release of carbon. Grasslands store 20% of global soil organic carbon, which releases massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere when dug up to cultivate. This makes grassland conservation critical for our planet's health. By preserving these lands and using sustainable livestock practices like adaptive grazing, we can protect ecosystems, reduce emissions, and ensure long-term food production. Read more in this publication about ecosystem management by Logan Thompson and co-authors: https://lnkd.in/dtM4ki5K #carbonsequestration #landconversion #sustainableuse #livestockfarming #protecttheenvironment #ecosystems #foodsystems #conservation #carbonemissions #societalroleofmeat

The NAPPC 2024-2025 Award Year has commenced! We are now accepting nominations for four distinct awards. Each year North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC), in conjunction with several partners, solicits nominations for prestigious awards: the Pollinator Advocate Award, the Farmer-Rancher Pollinator Conservation Award, the Pollinator Roadside Management Award, and the Pollinator Electric Power Award. Awards are given in Canada, the United States, and Mexico supporting all of the work that goes into protecting North American pollinator populations. Winners of these awards are recognized at the NAPPC Conference hosted annually in October. Nominees in all categories understand just how important pollinators are to food, culture, and life. They have taken that extra step to help out the birds, bees, butterflies, moths, flies and bats that support agriculture and ecosystems everywhere. Learn more and submit nominations by Friday, July 19th at https://lnkd.in/gBZxczds #NAPPC #NAPPC2024 #Pollinator #Pollinators #Bee #Bees #NativeBees #Butterflies #Monarchs #Bumblebees #Birds #Bats #Moths #NativeFlowers #Farms #Farmers #Roadsides #ElctricPower #Solar #Landmanagement #PollinatorHabitat #PollinatorConservation

The Nature Conservancy profiled farmer Jeff Duling, who farms 100% no-till because he knows the importance of keeping water coming off his farm clean. Using cover crops and no-till practices, he’s making sure runoff water is safe for his family and community. “I got a hat on my head right now, protecting my head. That’s what cover crops does, protects that soil out there.” The Agroecology + Innovation Matters initiative thanks all you resilient producers who are putting in the extra effort to build healthier soil, reduce nutrient runoff and erosion, conserve natural resources, and sequester carbon. https://lnkd.in/g92eq532 #AIMillinois #TakeAIM #conservation #illinoisagriculture #sustainablefarming #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #regenerativefarm #agvocacy #agriculture #farmer #illinois #farmersofillinois #sustainability #covercrops #soilhealth #farming #farm #agriculturelife #conservationchampions

Farmers in the UK produce high quality food and need to make a profit. 💶 We must also ensure that nature recovers and our farms are climate resilient. 🌧️ ☀️ Getting both right will ensure that farming businesses move forward to the next generation in a better, not worse state. 👨👩👧👦 How can this be achieved? How do long term management goals impact on the short term? Great case studies like this show us the way. ✅ #farming #future #familyfarm #food #profit #nature #wildlife #agroforestry #trees #reslience #climatechangesolutions
Jack Cockburn took five years to establish a nature-friendly farm at Treberfedd so he could make the finances stack up 🌳 Now the farm’s 140 acres, spread across two sites, are a mixture of grasslands, hay meadows, wetlands, and old and new woodlands. Since 2004, more than 15,000 trees have been planted at Treberfedd. 💬 “Trees make farms more climate resilient. They are an effective buffer against extreme weather such as storms, flooding, or excess heat. I’ve seen the results on my own farm, with trees benefitting food production, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.” Jack hasn't had to buy hay or silage since 2012, and the pasture has reduced his vets’ bills dramatically. The animals browse hedgerows and trees in addition to grazing, while in the spring or autumn, a field is sown with a mix of clover, herbs and grasses. 💬 “You do get a drop in the production from the land for the first two to three years of transition, but then with the right methods like rotational grazing, clover and the targeted use of animal manure, you see a gradual rebalancing and increase in soil fertility.” Read Jack’s full story: https://lnkd.in/ejq9D3mw
