Cattle Australia Chief Executive Officer, Dr Chris Parker, joined the ABSF Annual Update at Beef2024 this morning to speak about the Australian red meat industry’s significant efforts to mitigate emissions and sequester carbon. During his presentation, Dr Parker said the 78% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions since the baseline year of 2005 was a compelling statistic. “This is just one marker of sustainability however, and industry must maintain a balanced approach to emissions reduction that acknowledges the role producers play in global food security and sustainable landscape management, and the role meat plays in economically, culturally and nutritionally contributing to communities here and around the world. “The red meat industry is in a unique position to have a positive influence on emissions mitigation and carbon sequestration, however we must recognise the environment in which we operate is also unique. “It is, therefore, vital there is strong support for initiatives such as the Land Management Commitment. This critical work seeks to acknowledge there are inherent ecological differences between land management practices for Australian beef production and other jurisdictions, and that fit-for-purpose, regionally-specific indicators for global reporting must be developed.” Find out more about the Land Management Commitment 👉 https://lnkd.in/gWmaie4e

With the love I have for my land, I don’t see myself working anywhere else.” Jaime Alberto García Flórez, who grows cocoa and Fairtrade coffee on his farm in Colombia. In 2024, the UK Government has pledged to move forward with new laws aimed at preventing deforestation linked to the goods we buy from overseas. Jaime’s love for his land means he understands the importance of protecting the environment. And he’s already taking action, practising forest-friendly farming techniques and planting shade trees on his land. But Jaime’s vital work, and meeting these new laws, costs money. Without a fair trade system and government climate funding that has been promised, but not yet delivered, the future of farmers like Jaime is at risk. Sign to tell our government to deliver their promised funding and ensure legal changes to tackle deforestation do not place the burden on farmers like Jaime. Jaime and millions like him are ready, willing, and more than able to protect forests and create a fairer future - we just need to do our bit and invest in their expertise. As we approach an election here in the UK, it’s time to remind politicians of all parties that we have a responsibility to tackle climate change in a way that also supports farmers already living with the worst impacts. Through innovative practices, we’ve achieved remarkable environmental reductions: 100% in water use, 99% in land use, and a 25% decrease in carbon emissions. 💧 We achieve a 100% reduction in water use by repurposing brewers' spent grain, eliminating the need for water-intensive steps like growing, harvesting, and malting barley in traditional methods. 🌾 Producing within our facility and utilising spent grain results in a 99% reduction in land use, significantly lowering the environmental footprint compared to traditional barley farming. 🚚 With a 25% carbon reduction, our approach involves collecting and drying spent grain, eliminating the need for barley to grow in the ground and be transported to various locations. These achievements underscore our steadfast commitment to sustainability. Time for some hopeful optimism 🤞 Some takeaways from a joint report presented to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday, the result of 7 months of intense negotiations among 29 organizations with a stake in, and often opposing views on, the agri-food sector. 👇👇👇 👉The experts agreed that it was crucial to support ongoing reductions in the consumption of animal-based proteins — e.g. meat and dairy — in favor of plant-based alternatives. 👉They also called for a review of EU food labeling legislation.......while advocating tax reductions and other social and fiscal incentives. “The sustainable choice needs to become the choice by default." 👉 (With regards to animal farms)......."voluntary buyout schemes — to reduce animal numbers — or reskilling programs to transition to alternative production systems with a focus on young farmers". And these, my friend, call for celebration, don't you think? 🎉 🤞🤞🤞 Here's hoping these recommendations indeed become actionable law. "Positioning themselves as the voice of farmers (haven’t heard that one before!), conservative and far-right parties are capitalizing on the outrage of farmers to advance their own agendas. Green rules are being named as one of the key reasons for farmers’ dire situation. But the truth is that the EU’s efforts to put in place tangible measures to address the pressing environmental challenges identified in the Green Deal fall short on what is needed and demanded by scientists, despite being a first step in the right direction. Of the Farm to Fork Strategy, originally designed to promote fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food systems, less than half of the promised food policies have been published.
