The stories that we use to talk about ourselves and our work create the mental models that guide our activities. Unfortunately, this is the case even if the world has changed and the story doesn’t fit the reality of today. Case in point: the idea that salespeople are either Farmers 👩🌾 or Hunters 🏹. This is a story that’s been around for decades that separates revenue motions into two different camps. The farmers cultivate relationships (often with big accounts) to create revenue. The hunters go and find new business through proactive outreach. Both of these stories can be spun positively or negatively depending on which side you identify with. But it’s not a good mental model for most sales roles these days. There are very few pure hunter or farmer roles. It takes a mix of activities. ⏹ Is being socially active on LinkedIn hunting or farming? It could be both depending on who you are engaging and how you are engaging. ⏹ What happens if a cold outreach gets a response because of branding work you did? Our calls and emails don't live in a vacuum. ⏹ What about a warm introduction? Sure it’s proactive outreach but you created the opening by building up the relationship with the person who did the introduction. The stories we tell ourselves have power. So instead of thinking that you are in one role or another, think of your work as encompassing the whole gamut of activities. Because that way, you’ll find a way to get the job done, no matter the channel or approach. If you get pigeonholed into just being a Hunter or Farmer, you’re going to miss out on opportunities and get beaten by someone who is using all of the tools at their disposal. #sales #salesmethodology #storytelling #socialselling
