Collaboration means across the whole pig production system – production management, health, nutrition, finance, and genetics – are all essential for optimal outcomes. Meredith considered how this relates to successful weaner management. One of the factors she discussed was production management. We need to do the routine tasks, such as cleaning, disinfecting and drying farrowing crates really well. If you do this well, we will spend less time on the non-routine tasks, such as treating sick pigs. Merideth also stressed the need for on-going skill development for farm personnel.
