I give an onboarding session to all of our new hires on the history of authentication. (I was a public policy major in college, after all). I made this slide shortly after we founded Stytch in 2020, and as I’m updating it this week, I’m finding it interesting to reflect on what belongs - or doesn’t belong - in a ‘selective history.’ To give an example - do passkeys belong on here? If so – in 2012 when FIDO was founded? In 2022 when Apple announced them? In 2023, when we saw broader adoption (also when Stytch introduced them into our own product)? Or are passkeys not “proven” enough to make this chart yet? I also have a more detailed version with a few other milestones - for example the invention of the Yubikey (2007) - that I’ve sometimes thought about pulling up. What would be in your selective history? Anything you would add or remove?
