As more investors look to private markets, advisors must use more than just potential IRRs as metrics. “It’s something that I will look at to evaluate performance, but it’s just one part of a bigger data-point subset,” Stephen said in the article. This reminds me of the saying “the past is prologue”. I started my career in the 401(k) industry at Bankers Trust Company. In the late 1980s. Back then large market 401(k) plans had investment menus that were primarily collective trust funds. Then in the 1990s and 2000s mutual funds dominated investment menus. Now…we are returning to the past. Collective Trusts are becoming dominant in investment menus. Evidenced by for TDFs, now 49% of total assets are CITs. And last year, 67% of TDF net inflows, went to CITs. Overall for 401(k) plans, CITs with multi trillions in assets. Generally lower cost, fiduciary friendly and ability to customize.

These objectives are codified in an Investment Policy Statement (IPS), which outlines the mission, investment goals, and strategies, helping to align management with organizational risk tolerance and constraints. Over time, several distinct investment approaches have gained prominence, including: Norway Model: Emphasizes a 60/40 equity-to-fixed-income split, passive investing, minimal alternatives, and tight tracking error limits. Endowment Model: Defined by high exposure to alternatives, active management, and outsourcing asset management. Canada Model: Similar to the Endowment model but with in-sourcing of asset management and high alternatives exposure. LDI Model: Focuses on fixed-income securities to hedge liabilities and interest rate risks, with a growth component to boost returns.
