Truths bombs about interning abroad as an African… I’ve talked about all the amazing things that comes with interning abroad and I’ve shared a lot about my summer internship experience in London. With the help of my amazing colleagues who have also interned across London, Glasgow, and New York, here are the hard truths we don’t usually talk about. ✨📍You will face many challenges at the same time! They will all hit you at the same time. These can include culture shock, homesickness, adapting to different work styles, expectations and imposter syndrome. All these won't happen in stages, when one hits you then next one is looming over your shoulder. ✨📍It is not all glamorous! So don’t expect to be a tourist 24/7. You have to balance your professional and personal life. ✨📍You need to be mindful of the cost of living! you have to be reasonable and responsible with your finances and ensure you have a budget that you stick to. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of welcoming the 2024 Interns to J.P.Morgan Glasgow. I understand that the first few days can be nerve wracking. So here are some of my tips to help you settle in. 1. Be curious: Ask questions and seek to learn. 2. Connect: Build relationships with your team. 3. Stay organised: Keep track of your tasks and deadlines. 4. Be patient: Give yourself time to adapt and grow. 5. Take notes: Document key information and insights. 6. Seek feedback: Regularly ask for and act on feedback. 7. Stay positive: Maintain a positive attitude and embrace challenges. 8. Be yourself: Authenticity goes a long way in building confidence. 9. Be proud: You’ve secured an internship at a global organisation. You deserve to be here. Celebrate your achievements - regardless of how small you think they might be. 10. Engage fully: Participate actively in meetings and discussions. Looking forward to seeing all you achieve!
