Chandigarh: After battling for life for 19 days, Lakhwinder Singh, a dental specialist, who suffered serious injuries in a road accident on September 11, took his last breath on Saturday. As per reports, on September 11, Singh and his colleague were cycling from Mohali to Chandigarh in the morning when they were hit by an over speeding auto driver at Sector 16-17 in Chandigarh. The horrific purported video of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing the moment when the auto hit the doctor and his colleague from behind. IT’S SCARY BUT WHAT HURTS THE MOST IS THE VICTIM BLAMING. MANY PEOPLE START BLAMING THE VICTIMS IN SUCH CASES IF THEY ARE NOT WEARING THE HELMETS. LET ME BE VERY CLEAR THAT THE CYCLING HELMETS SAVE YOU FROM LIGHT FALLS BUT NOT FROM SUCH DELIBERATE ACCIDENTS WHERE THE PERSON IS ACTUALLY CRUSHED. LET’S NOT FORGET THE RECENT ACCIDENTS IN DELHI WHEN OUR FELLOW CYCLISTS DIED. SHUBENDHU AND KUNWAR BOTH WERE WEARING THE HELMETS. It’s all about turning blind while driving on the roads and also while designing the streets. Neither while designing nor while driving, we see the cyclists and the pedestrians. The way cars need the road, cyclists and pedestrians too need their due space that belongs just to them. We cannot let go such culprits with just a case of rash driving. We need strict action and punishment in these cases so that people are more careful while driving on the roads. Any person driving commercial vehicle, if found intoxicated while driving should be barred to drive at all throughout their life. #cyclists #pedestrians #streets #roadsafety #rashdriving #penalise

Absolutely inexcusable from the point of the auto driver. This was a clearly a red signal. Anyone who gets hit with this speed be it a motorcyclist with a helmet, a pedestrian crossing, anyone in the way would probably meet the same fate. Even if the government creates infrastructure or we have regulations in place. This mindset complete disregard of the value of human life will not unfortunately find its place somehow. This was not human error.

We encourage cycling. But, this accident shows, cycling on main roads may not be safer. The auto driver has to be punished.

People on roads are insane and the personal responsibility of hitting someone the guilt is zero.. we should always cycle the opposite way or walk at least we see the traffic coming in.. but road is not scary .. people are.. may the departed souls rest in peace

Now it’s high time to reconsider the traffic violators to be declared as Traffic criminals, many drivers riders use cell phone while on drive or watch videos - In this case what about the precious life a cyclist? It’s a murder case … authorities pl. take action on traffic criminals any one who violate and kill others … helmet and seatbelt not wearing I consider as sucide attempt

You know what will happen next?? family of cyclists will suffer for life long for his loses, will not even get justice or do not even care , because they lose after all a person . the other colleague will have lifetime rods ane plates in body and multiple fractures. The suspect was eating dal chaval roti at home, same he will get in jail. Was spendig day in 4×4 auto rickshaw, will spend days in 10 x10 barrake . Few leaders will give gifts, sewing machines to the family of that Rickshaw driver so they can survive. After few years and his good nature he will be released. And Again he will start riding rickshaw . And people says, Why after studying and getting education people leave india and prefer to stay in other countries. This is our incredible India.

It is so unfortunate to be witnessing such incidents. Prayers for the Lakhwinder ji and may the family gather strength to bear this invaluable loss. I hope the other cyclist is okay now. And about intoxicated drivers- many long route bus drivers are habitual offenders. So are many auto and truck drivers. Such Car drivers in the zone 11pm-7am are also in such a state. I'm really pained to see this and have no words to explain my fright and anguish.

It’s really bad that there is no check on their driving as they are not properly trained .There should be no discrimination for traffic rules between rich n poor . Strict action should be taken against these untrained auto drivers . On the other Chandigarh is a planned city and special cycling tracks are there on almost every route .So everybody should follow defensive driving approach to follow cycle tracks . Chandigarh traffic police is famous all across the India for its strictness . I would suggest more awareness campaigns should be conducted by the traffic police .

If u observe the video carefully just 2 second before the hit, driver attacked cyclist....no one was overtaking auto so no point of steering left ...it seems attempt to kill. Dalip Sabharwal

Very Terrible. Almost no rules are being followed and you will not find traffic police except at rare locations where to only do nothing who should manage and at least the driver should have some pressure of being caught if they violate the Traffic rule

Auto was coming from the back. Auto driver should be given the highest punishment. Further the facts to be investigated are. 1. Why did Auto driver crossed lane and came in the way of bicycle. 2. Auto driver would have taken right, where absolutely there is no traffic. 3. Is this a pre planned act. 4. Is the driver in inebriated condition.
