In 2015, I heard Andy Stanley ask this: "What is the one thing that breaks your 💔 heart more than anything else?" My immediate answer was: "Families whose adoptions break down." I will never forget the power of that moment. Andy's imperative at the end of his message was to go do something about whatever that answer was. I couldn't shake his talk. I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was more than just a skilled communicator's message that kept me up at night thinking about it. Something greater was working in me to respond. My response to that question has led to leaving one career for another that helps families say together. It's led to unfathomable joy at being able to work for something that matters. It's led to the privilege of working with a team whose hearts are also broken by the impact of trauma. If you read this and said, "Yes! #RespectForParentsDay was created to help recognize the important role parents play not only in a child's life but also in our communities. Important parental figures are not always biological and can also be grandparents, aunts and uncles, godparents, and even mentors. Despite clear evidence of the importance of engaging parental figures and families for youth in the juvenile justice system to create and maximize positive outcomes, families are often not included in strategic planning and are only included as an “add-on” to traditional system operations. Our client @Justice4families is working to change that. Founded and led by a parent of an incarcerated youth, J4F is a national juvenile justice reform organization that is founded and run by families who have been directly impacted by the juvenile justice system. Pleased to share that as Special Needs Advocacy has grown, we have been able to concurrently expand the reach of our mission. We currently act as trustee for over 15% of our clients on a pro bono basis. Our pro bono services are awarded to small dollar special needs trusts, or trusts where the assets are fixed assets and charging a fee would create a hardship. For example, we act as trustee for three clients whose sole asset is their residence. In addition, so far in 2024 we have awarded microgrants to twelve nonprofits across a broad spectrum of missions. These include: Legal Services Hunger Homelessness Children's Health Animal Welfare Investigative Journalism Women's Health Lastly, we have also expended direct grants to individuals facing personal hardships, such as suspension of SNAP benefits. On a personal note, this isn't a path that I would have envisioned ten years ago when I was working in financial services. But it's a divergence that has been more rewarding than I ever could have imagined. Attorneys.
