From August 2020: I have to ask why I do not have a full-time teaching position yet, is it... -because there are quotas and districts must interview a percentage of candidates outside of the immediate area/district with no intent of hiring such individuals? -because hiring is based on budget not on the right candidate for the job: educated, experienced, and certified -because recruiting is not done, only hiring over the summer months hence little to no time for interviews, spouse notice at his/her employment, student record transfer, home search, moving, etc -because of my age? -because I am not originally from here or there? -because I did not graduate from the school district? -because I am not related to anyone in the district? -because of the amount of experience I have? -because of the number of certifications I have? -because I am a 2nd career educator? -because I am a parent? -because I care too much? -because I continue to seek out learning? -because I advocate for better? -because I grew up in central Troy (8th street)? -and because I believe in equity for all children? Why?

Over the past 6 weeks The Wren School students have been partaking in the 6x1hr BSL series with Sign source facilitators Anthony Sinclair and Paula Clarke. The school said "They have loved it, thank you to all the facilitators." Over the six weeks we have covered : Introduction to BSL and general Deaf Awareness; Introduction to Deaf Awareness, BSL alphabet/fingerspelling, introductory questions and phrases, lip-reading and fingerspelling activities Family; An introduction to correct hand-shapes, facial expressions and BSL grammar, basic conversational topics, family relations, describing a person including appearance, describing where people live, related short phrases Numbers; 1-100, language relating to money, talking about age, time, related short phrase Weather and School/College Subjects; The weather, short weather related phrases, school subjects, school life, describing classrooms, related short phrases to school Life at university/college – Basic language involving FE/HE courses, related phrases, how to discuss career aspirations, introductory language regarding the social life – joining clubs Applying for a new job – Basic language involving applying for jobs, related phrases to help with the application process Huge thanks to Andy at The Wren School for putting on our workshops this academic year, it's been a pleasure! https://lnkd.in/d9f9wr4h

Should you send your child to Grammar school? State grammar schools in the UK select pupils based on academic ability, usually testing children in the final year of primary school at age 10/11. There are currently around 163 state grammar schools in 36 English local authorities with 167,000 pupils. These publicly-funded schools provide a quality, academically-focused education like private schools, but completely free of charge. However, simply passing the 11+ exam does not guarantee admission. Many grammar schools select pupils based on test score or proximity over raw exam pass, and thousands of qualified pupils can miss out each year. Families of children who narrowly miss admission or do not get offered a place on National Offer Day may appeal, though grammar school appeals face long odds. On a positive note, an analysis of 2022 GCSE results found state grammar schools demonstrate some of the best value-added scores from Key Stage 2 to GCSE levels. Caution must be taken in interpreting these figures given grammar schools’ highly selective admissions policies. Overall grammar schools remain controversial yet valued institutions. They undeniably offer bright, motivated pupils an affordable path to academic excellence.
