“By harnessing new innovative technologies, leaders in education can do more than simply sustain education – they can transform how students learn, and teachers are supported. The sweet spot for EdTech occurs when the technology is fit for purpose and students and teachers know how to use the technology and get the most out of it. For this to happen, the digital foundations must first be in place, something requiring nuance, vision and collaboration with the aim of always putting students’ success first.” #edtech #innovation #technology #education #schools #digital #learning #IT #infrastructure

Have you seen the USA Department of Education’s Office of EdTech National Plan yet? What are your thoughts? An interesting read this morning, which if you’re in EdTech, is worth a glance -> https://tech.ed.gov/netp The NETP ‘charts a path for all schools, educators, and students to realize the potential of technology in supporting better “everywhere, all-the-time” learning.’ It may not be new news in education, but it certainly is a step in the right direction in addressing three main categories of response to the current digital divide across teaching and learning: 1. The Digital Use Divide - use of dynamic applications of EdTech to enhance learning, by exploring, creating, and engaging in critical thinking. 2. The Digital Design Divide - creating opportunities for educators to professionally develop their knowledge and skills of EdTech, to equip them with the tools and strategies to design experiential learning. 3. The Digital Access Divide - the opportunity for students and teachers to gain equitable access to EdTech, including devices, connectivity, and content, as well as ‘instruction in digital health, safety, and citizenship skills’. Great to see that planning includes instruction at the core, with people and content in mind. It specially invites us to consider ‘the kinds of instructional tasks’ we are asking students to complete - do they prepare them for a ‘world where they cannot rely on content alone’? So much work to be done in future readiness, but it’s positive to see some of the historical problems in education being addressed, with an important focus on future ready skills, creativity, and experiences. #EdTech #PedTech #future #education #technology #futurereadyskills #futurereadiness #thefutureisnow #creativity #creativeleadership #womenintech #ai #llm #womeninai #digstrat #digitalstrategy #digitaltransformation

The Alarming Consequences of Not Embracing Digitalization in Schools In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, digitalization has become an integral part of our daily lives. However, many schools still lag behind in embracing digitalization, putting their students at a significant disadvantage. The dangers of not digitalizing schools are multifaceted and far-reaching, affecting not only the students but also the educators and the entire education system. 1. Limited Access to Information Without digitalization, students have limited access to a vast array of information, resources, and tools, hindering their ability to learn and grow. This restricts their knowledge and understanding of the world, making them less competitive in the global arena. 2. Inefficient Learning Methods Traditional teaching methods can be time-consuming, ineffective, and often result in rote learning. Digitalization offers interactive, engaging, and personalized learning experiences, enhancing student engagement and improving academic outcomes. 3. Lack of Digital Literacy In today's digital age, it's essential for students to possess basic digital skills, such as coding, online safety, and digital citizenship. Without digitalization, students risk being left behind, struggling to navigate an increasingly digital world. 4. Insufficient Teacher Training Educators need training and support to effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices. Without digitalization, teachers may struggle to develop the skills necessary to prepare students for success. 5. Wasted Resources Manual processes and paper-based systems can lead to wasted resources, including time, money, and environmental damage. Digitalization streamlines processes, reducing waste and increasing efficiency. 6. Inadequate Assessment and Feedback Digital tools provide instant feedback and assessment, enabling educators to tailor instruction and support student growth. Without digitalization, feedback can be delayed, and opportunities for improvement may be missed. 7. A Disconnected Education System Digitalization connects schools, educators, and students, facilitating collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Without it, the education system remains fragmented, hindering progress and innovation. In conclusion, the dangers of not digitalizing schools are stark and far-reaching. It's crucial for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders to prioritize digitalization, ensuring our students are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Harnessing the Power of Technology in Education Technology is transforming education in profound ways, reshaping how students learn and how teachers teach. As we reflect on the integration of digital tools in the classroom, several key insights emerge that highlight the importance of embracing technology to unlock the full potential of education. 1. Integrating Technology into Classrooms The integration of technology in classrooms is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Digital tools enhance student engagement, facilitate personalized learning, and equip students with the skills needed to thrive in a digital-first world. By making learning more interactive and accessible, technology helps create a more inclusive and effective educational environment. 2. The Evolution from Chalkboards to Keyboards The shift from traditional chalkboards to digital keyboards represents a fundamental change in education. This evolution is not just about adopting new tools, but about transforming the entire learning experience. Digital platforms allow for more dynamic, flexible, and student-centered approaches, catering to diverse learning styles and making education more engaging. 3. The Role of Educators in a Tech-Driven Classroom While technology is at the forefront of educational innovation, the role of educators remains central. Teachers are not being replaced by technology; rather, they are empowered by it. By blending traditional teaching methods with digital tools, educators can create a balanced learning environment that fosters both academic and personal growth in students. 4. The Power of Personalized Learning Personalized learning, enabled by technology, is key to meeting the unique needs of each student. This approach allows students to learn at their own pace, receive targeted support, and focus on areas where they need improvement. Personalized learning ensures that every student can achieve their full potential, making education more equitable and effective. 5. This year I set up my own company to promote the teaching and use of technology in schools and as I wind some of these projects down, I've been thinking a lot about how EdTech is currently used in schools. The landscape of education is rapidly evolving, and EdTech has the potential to transform how we teach and learn in the UK. However, there's a significant hurdle that many EdTech companies seem to overlook: the budget constraints faced by many schools. The reality is that much of the technology in our schools is not the latest or most advanced, making it challenging to integrate cutting-edge solutions effectively. I am a firm believer in the power of EdTech to enhance learning experiences and outcomes. Yet, for this potential to be fully realized, EdTech companies must understand that not all schools have access to the newest technology. Tailored solutions that work with existing infrastructure are crucial for wider adoption and success. Moreover, with the increasing number of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in UK schools, EdTech could play a vital role in providing personalized learning experiences. However, to achieve this, schools need to allocate time for teachers to explore and understand how to use these technologies effectively. Teachers are at the forefront of this transformation, and their professional development is key to harnessing the full potential of EdTech. As we look to the future of EdTech in UK schools, here are some questions I think we should consider: How can EdTech companies create solutions that are affordable and compatible with the existing technology in schools? What strategies can be implemented to ensure teachers have adequate time and resources to learn and integrate new technologies into their classrooms? How can EdTech be tailored to support the diverse needs of students, particularly those with SEN? #EdTech #Education #UKSchools #InnovationInEducation #SEN #Teachers #FutureOfLearning
