What new technologies are in focus that help aid security professionals in doing their work?
The integration of Artificial Intelligence in physical security presents a plethora of exciting opportunities. We are currently witnessing the evolution of this technology to aid us in optimizing our OODA – Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act cycle. AI-powered analytics in CCTV systems will allow us to efficiently observe and monitor deviations. The AI will possess the ability to orient itself and identify events that necessitate special attention, while also distinguishing false alarms that can be ignored. Moreover, we foresee AI being able to autonomously make decisions, carry out protocols as required, and thereby reduce the human workload. We are also exploring AI technology-enabled CCTV systems that can assist us in detecting unsafe activities, preventing fires, facilitating quick searches on archived video footage, conducting behavior analytics to identify potential troublemakers in crowds, and a myriad of other applications. These decision-support measures will significantly enhance our ability to make prompt and well-informed decisions.
One particularly promising area of technology is the utilization of drones for security operations. Drones have evolved from being mere aerial surveillance tools to becoming force multipliers. With their versatile payloads and AI-driven analytics, the potential applications are extensive. We envision drones being capable of conducting continuous autonomous operations in remote areas, day or night, and in all weather conditions. This implies that they should be able to operate in relay mode with self-charging capabilities. For specific scenarios such as IR issues or during disaster and fire relief operations, drones should possess analytics that can provide a headcount of individuals in each area. These enhancements to existing drones will significantly enhance security capabilities for the future.
Cloud-based technologies are transforming security applications, video management systems, analytics, and data storage, offering a unique opportunity for us to ensure tailored solutions, data integrity, reliability, remote monitoring, and constant availability. While cloud-based solutions are cost-effective for small businesses or project sites lacking on-site infrastructure, they may not be as economical for large enterprises with extensive camera and device networks. Nevertheless, a breakthrough in cost reduction could encourage larger companies to adopt cloud-based solutions.
