Tips for Graduate engineers Should you go on Staff or remain on contract? I was recently contacted by a former student who now works in the mining sector. He's been given the opportunity to either join the staff or work on a contract basis. While contract rates seem better immediately, consider that staff positions offer four weeks of paid holiday and around 10 days of sick leave. Furthermore, being on staff demonstrates greater commitment to the company, which could be advantageous. The lure of immediate gratification from higher pay can be compelling, but it's essential to weigh this against the long-term benefits of a staff role. As a recent graduate, it's crucial not to get drawn into a cycle of short-term contracts unless absolutely necessary to gain initial experience. These roles can become addictive and lead to frequent job changes, which can hinder your career progress in the long run. If you aspire to a managerial role, particularly around the ages of 40 to 45, having a consistent employment history is crucial. Those who secure these positions are often not the most talented, but they exhibit reliability and stability, which organizations value. People appreciate familiarity and certainty, and this mentality often supports long-term company success. If you aim for principal or general management roles, consistency in the early stages of your career is vital. The decisions you make in your first three to five years significantly impact your ability to secure these senior positions later. Many people overlook this, mistakenly believing they can leapfrog to management by frequently switching jobs, only to find it backfires. About 77 percent of workers in the United States have already reported workplace stress, according to the Work in America 2023 survey published in April by the American Psychological Association. The US Department of Labor's Occupational Information Network then ranked 873 occupations based on stress tolerance. The ranking is based on a scale from 0 to 100, where 100 is the most stressful a job can be, here are the 10 least stressful professions. Cartographer and photogrammetrician (52) Environmental economist (52) Packaging and filling machine operator (52) Archivist (53) CNC programmer (53) Electrical equipment assembler (53) Industrial ecologist (53) Fuel cell engineer (54) Highway maintenance (55) Machine feeding and loading worker (56) It is interesting that in the United States, among the listed professions, only the environmental economist reaches the average salary level of 100,000 dollars or more, while the packaging and filling machine operators can take home the least, on average, just 36,000 dollars. According to estimates 70% of working engineers are passive job seekers. These are people open to good opportunities but not necessarily interested in pursuing them. Dratis caters to this group by presenting them relevant opportunities on their terms. Engineers on our platform receive an email whenever a position is posted that matches their skillset. They can view the position at their leisure or ignore the email altogether. They are in control and never have to worry about email spam or annoying phone calls. This is one of the reasons why more engineers are choosing Dratis. Companies looking to access this large pool of engineers should skate to the puck and go where the engineers are going…. Give us a call or post a job. #hiring #opentowork #engineers #softwaredeveloper

✪Sr Talent Acquisition Specialist ✪ Account Manager ✪DM for a free consultation for all your hiring needs.
Never in the 4 years of my engineering life would I have thought that I will end up in this field. This profession has taught me a lot.. Patience, people skills, resilience and a whole bunch of usable skills outside of the job. Yes, it has its ups and downs. Responsive client, unresponsive candidate(vice versa), perfect candidate but above budget, perfect client, perfect candidate then notice period issues. You know the drill, but the best part I love about my work is the call where I get to give the good news to the candidate that they have been selected. That feeling of sharing a moment of happiness with basically an unknown person is just priceless. Oh and the incentive later helps too 😉 #Happy_Talent_Acquisition_Day fellow Recruiters and TAs. Keep up the great work.
