After two and half action-packed years at Speakers for Schools it’s time for a change. The charity has always been more than ‘work’ for me, this has been personal! I grew up the child of a single parent, educated at the local comp and in receipt of free school meals, but was lucky enough to go on to attend Oxford University. Within my first week the gap in experience between myself and some of my privately educated piers became abundantly clear. Not only did they know what they wanted to do but had parents that had opened all the necessary doors to get them there, I on the other hand was still only at the proverbial starting point in the race of life. It struck me that this was not only unfair, but limiting in terms of the subsequent talent pool that would be available to employers. So, when the recruiter reached out towards the end of 2021 coming to the charity seemed like a no brainer. The last two and a bit years have been quite the journey, there have of course been challenging times, but the highs have invariably outweighed the lows and I can honestly say that projects such as the Work Experience For All campaign, developing our new brand, launching our CRM system and new website, hiring an incredible team and the numerous media wins have been real career highlights. The needs of the charity have however changed, as have my own, so it’s time for the bat call: I’m on the lookout for interesting companies, with interesting people doing interesting things, so if you or someone in your network know of any opportunities that would align with my skills and experience I’d be super grateful for a recommendation or referral. I can't wait to see what's next in store for me, and I look forward to the conversations ahead.

So glad to say that I have taken on further hours with Smart Works Greater Manchester to work on the ‘Brighter Futures Fund’, this will look at more support for ladies aged 16/19. With this funding we are hoping to support more ladies to feel confident in the way they present themselves for interview, and in their journey to succeeding at a job interview. We want to create a focus programme supporting more 16/19 year old unemployed women living in socially deprived and minority communities across Stockport, Tameside and wards within Manchester City, doing this by offering the 3 Smart Works services. 1. Job help 2. Interview preparation and styling. 3. Second Dressing (Capsule Wardrobe) I’m looking to gain new connections with Stockport College, The Manchester College, Tameside College, Stockport Council, Manchester City Council, Tameside Council and any other support organisations working with young women across Manchester ✨ Any help reaching out will be greatly appreciated! Welcome to Career Series, based on my experiences in certain industries. If you are new to the workforce, hopefully, this series will help you decide what route you would like to take for your career and how to have a peaceful work experience. Let’s start by exploring the early days of my career. I started in the non-profit space after graduating with my undergraduate degree in psychology. Before we explore my first career and how I stumbled into the role. I want to share how I settled on my major. I didn’t settle on a major, I stumbled into my major as well. As a young child, I wanted to be a veterinarian, which changed to broadcast journalism, and by the time I reached college. I decided to scrap both of those ideas and take on psychology. I have learned that not having a plan doesn’t always work. I was the type of person who felt like getting a degree in anything was ok because I had a degree. However, hindsight is always 20/20, and having a good plan is always a good idea. What do I mean when I say a better plan, I mean just that. Researching the career you are interested in, speaking with people in the industry, and even shadowing some of those in the industry to see the pros and cons of that career is a good plan. Now that we have discussed creating a plan, let’s get back to discussing the early days of my career. My first career out of college was working for a non-profit organization. Side note: I wish colleges would teach you what to expect in the workplace. I received my degree, and I was like ok I’m ready to conquer life, when I had no clue what to expect in the workplace. I didn’t think about the many personalities I would meet and how to navigate those personalities. I didn’t think about the managers I would encounter and the mark they would leave good and bad on me. I didn’t think about the stressors that I would encounter and how best to protect my mental health and set personal boundaries. I didn’t give thought to what my career, my future career would be, and where I saw myself outside of the role I currently held. I supported a caseload of 25 women and I facilitated classes on co-dependency. Some of my other duties included taking women to food and clothing shelters, serving as the liaison between the women I served and the court system, and helping these ladies find housing. I look back on my time in this role and I appreciate the rewarding work that I was doing, however, I never thought long-term. I never thought about the lack of pay or the burnout that would factor into the role. Lessons learned Plan, Plan, Plan, and when you think you have a good plan in place for picking out your major or career, review your plan and adjust as needed. Think long-term. If you are just starting your career, settle in, but don't get cozy. I stress this because before you know it, three to four years have passed and you're either burnt out and desperate for a career change or getting close.
