Why Female Focused Training? In a recently published Harvard Business Review article ‘Where Women’s Leadership Development Programs Fall Short’ the authors caution against offering such programmes in the absence of a broader effort to advance women. They suggest that doing so can ‘…signal that women are deficient and need fixing, or that the underrepresentation of women in senior leadership positions is a result of their inability to compete with men’.    In order to leverage the results from such programmes – which include better promotion rates and increased retention – the authors recommend that ‘When a talented woman is offered the chance to attend leadership training, make it a requirement that her managers to sponsor her for new — and appropriately compensated — opportunities upon her return. This should include promoting her potential and performance when she’s not in the room, nominating her for stretch assignments, sharing social capital through deliberate networking, publicly supporting women in senior leadership roles, and voicing support for her in promotion decisions. If she’s talented enough to merit leadership preparation, then someone should be held accountable for her ascension to meaningful leadership roles. The RISE Project wants to hear from you! DCA has joined forces with SSI and Chief Executive Women (CEW) to create RISE, a visionary change project that aims to build pathways to leadership for women from culturally and racially marginalised (CARM) backgrounds. RISE will work directly with 25 organisations, and 375 CARM women within them to identify and break down systemic barriers preventing them from reaching senior leadership positions. RISE will also focus on the organisation and what it can do to further lift potential barriers. Now in the project's Pilot phase, RISE is working with each CARM woman participant to develop a personalised career advancement plan, which may include opportunities to engage in CARM-safe leadership programs. We are seeking suggestions for *leadership training programs* that are specifically supportive of CARM women – programs that are inclusive, empowering and able to acknowledge CARM women’s unique experiences to foster a safe learning environment. We’d like to hear from you on CARM women-safe leadership development options that may be a good fit. What do we mean by CARM women-safe? You and I both know that as female leaders we have a different leadership story than our male counterparts have. Our journey TO leadership and our journey WITH leadership is not better, not worse…..just different. It was 2014 and I was in my office speaking with one of our vendors. The vendor said to me “You have RBF.” I had no idea what RBF was. I said, “what?” and he said, “Resting Bitch Face.” Ummmmm what? So much was wrong with this encounter…where shall I begin? Is it that this guy though it was ok to refer to how I looked? Is it that this guy thought it was ok to use the word Bitch in a sentence referencing me? Is it that this guy took liberties to speak to me, the CEO of my organization, as if I was someone he knew intimately? As I think back on this encounter, I HATE how I reacted. I didn’t react with the personal power that I possess as a woman. Instead, I laughed it off and then told others “I didn’t know I had RBF.” I cringe at how I handled it. When I think back now, I wonder, why did he feel he could speak to me like that? Why don’t they say to men who have serious looks on their faces that they have “RDF?” Have you ever had an encounter like this one? I bet you have stories of you own. This is precisely why it is so important to get into the room with other women who have been where you are and are now where you want to be!
