A City master plan is critical for residents and the informal sector to understand and be among those constructing it. The exclusion and manipulation that eventually affects them either directly or indirectly are derivatives of a non-participatory and passive attitude in the processes that lead to how the City will be structured in a prescribed period. The existing conflicts and intolerance between the aforementioned categories and authorities can only be attributed to the lack of foresight by all stakeholders in the formation of erstwhile plans. I deliberately take part in all activities that seek to institute social change and influence sustainable development.

The true value of an empty building lies in its potential. We talk a lot about outcomes, but what about process? Regeneration can take decades so it’s important to remember that social value is created along the way. In our new report, "Social Value: How to be a good ancestor" we argue that all stakeholders should be aware of the main stages of a project and how they will be involved. Seek feedback and explain how you have responded. Social value is created through interactions that build trust and empathy. Our research highlighted several good examples of establishing a "learning culture". Pollard Thomas Edwards' Happy Homes Project in Enfield uses post-occupancy evaluations as an important way to improve social impact. Working with the University of Reading and University of Cambridge, PTE is developing a social value rating system based on the effects of development on resident wellbeing. We found longitudinal data was valuable in major regeneration projects, thus the focus on "legacy". For example, Social Life has worked in South Acton with Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) L&Q and Countryside Partnerships for over ten years. They are developing insights that inform future development. In our report, we call for a "developer endowment" that ensures there is funding for longitudinal research with the local community given resources to gather data and participate in the evaluation. Our delegation was able to experience Vienna's renowned social housing program, one of the most successful models of affordable urban housing in the world. We witnessed firsthand the transformative impact Vienna's approach can have on our own local challenges, and so many of these leaders have been taking action to move this forward here in LA ever since!
