Unrelated industry. Unrelated job. In my experience, most Producers also had a career before insurance. But this doesn't mean you're starting from scratch. If you can identify the skills and behaviors from your pre-insurance job that can be leveraged in your Producer career, you can hit the ground running faster. Good opportunity in underwriting

In 1999 I visited Texas for the first time. While here, I met a group of people who seemed interesting and we hung out for the two weeks I was here. My last night in town I joined them for a bonfire. A few hours in, some of them left for just a few minutes and came back with a lot of beer to keep the party going. Not being a drinker, and needing to wake early the next day, I left. Turns out, the beer was stolen from a closed gas station nearby. Fast-forward a few months and I am in a courtroom with a deplorable public defender who "helped me" plead no contest to a state jail felony. Even though I wasn't present, Texas has no accessory crimes, so I was just as guilty for not reporting the crime (this is how it was explained to me, I am not a law expert). Within a few years I was in a supervisor role at Petco. A few more years and I'm a manager at Petsmart. A little further and I start working at a brand-new used book store (2nd & Charles, a Books-a-Million offshoot), where I worked my way to the General Manager position within five years. All these moves are due to a wife (at the time) who was in the Navy, so we had to move a lot. All of that was within 10 years of my release from state jail, and I haven't had any legal trouble since. Last jump...It has now been 25 years since my court appearance and I've been offered a job as a salesperson at AT&T. I left my current job to take this offer (and cut two hours per trip off my commute) and two days before my start date, they tell me the background check says I can't work there. Same thing happens at Lowe's, and then Mattress Firm (obviously, I'm in sales). Now I've been unemployed for a month for a 25 year old issue that didn't hamper my career before, even when it was just five years old! In a state that says it can't be reported after seven years! To be fair, I don't lie on applications and say "no" to the felony question, but how is this right? Many of these companies have employees younger than the smudges on my record, and far less experience, so can someone help me understand what is going on?
