Understanding CO₂ Emissions in Hospitals: Scope 1, 2, and 3 Did you know that Scope 3 emissions dominate the carbon footprint of most hospitals, accounting for up to 70% of total emissions? Here's how the emissions typically break down (source: ChatGPT): ✅ Scope 1 (Direct Emissions): 10% These come from on-site activities, such as fuel combustion for heating or hospital-owned vehicles. ✅ Scope 2 (Indirect Energy Emissions): 20% Generated by the electricity, steam, or cooling purchased by the hospital. ✅ Scope 3 (Value Chain Emissions): 70% Includes emissions from the supply chain, medical products, waste management. Why does this matter? To achieve net-zero goals, hospitals need to focus on their value chain (Scope 3) while improving energy efficiency (Scope 2) and reducing direct emissions (Scope 1). Taking action: - Collaborate with suppliers to reduce emissions across the supply chain. - Transition to renewable energy sources. - Invest in sustainable waste and transport solutions. Let's rethink healthcare for a sustainable future. What are your thoughts on tackling hospital emissions? Share your ideas below!

🏥 Hospitals are the heart of healing, but did you know they’re also some of the most energy-intensive buildings? ⚡️ Inefficient energy use drives up costs and carbon emissions, clashing with global sustainability goals. The good news? Solutions like smart energy management systems, upgraded HVAC technology, and efficient lighting can make a world of difference. By cutting waste and optimizing operations, hospitals can care for patients AND the planet. ✨ Investing in energy-efficient practices isn’t just good for the environment – it boosts resilience and lowers costs. From retrofitting older buildings with solar panels and insulation upgrades to adopting greener IT infrastructure, the opportunities are endless. Hospitals that embrace these changes set an example for responsible, sustainable care. 🌍🏥 🔦 Key strategies include: • Smart energy management systems (EMS) for real-time insights • HVAC innovations like geothermal pumps and efficient filtration • LED lighting with occupancy sensors • Green building design for new and retrofitted facilities Ready to transform energy savings into a healthier future? The top-5 measures we describe are the easiest to do and offer the biggest #energysavings and #emissionsreductions in hospitals. The polls found that over the next year, 70% of hospitals are likely to implement ventilation scheduling and lighting projects, 64% are planning boiler plant optimization, and 50% looking at pumping system optimization projects. Thank you to everyone who joined our Greening Health Care webinar on April 10th and Amandeep Deol P.Eng., PMP from Enerlife Consulting Inc. for providing his technical support. Hospitals are among the most energy-intensive buildings in the U.S., consuming 2.5 times more energy per square foot than average commercial buildings, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. With the rising costs of utilities, healthcare systems need to identify opportunities to save energy and money. Our mission is simple – we make buildings better so you can provide better patient care. Through our partnerships with healthcare systems like yours, we’ve helped create sustainable, more energy efficient, healthier, and safer spaces that support resiliency and future-proofing while lowering utility costs. #HealthcareSystems #HealthcareFacilities #FacilitySolutions #EnergyEfficiency #UtilityCosts #Sustainability

Healthcare facilities are embracing decarbonization with the use of R717 (Ammonia) Heat Pumps for space heating. This shift towards natural refrigerants like R717 is part of the effort to reduce carbon footprint. In North America, the use of Ammonia refrigeration, cooling, freezing, chillers, and heat pumps is deemed safe when following existing codes set by ANSI/ASHRAE/IIAR standards. Take a step towards sustainability and explore the benefits of environmentally friendly refrigerants like R717 in healthcare settings. Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre (QMC), one of the largest NHS hospitals in the UK, is leading by example by implementing R717 GEA Heat Pumps. This innovative approach showcases the significant impact of eco-friendly refrigerants in healthcare facilities.
