🌊 The Ocean Community Empowerment and Nature (OCEAN) Grants Programme is a new competitive #grants scheme, supporting #innovative proposals from local coastal #communities that aim to deliver marine protection and reduce poverty worldwide. #ForCoral OCEAN aims to attract innovative proposals from local organisations working closely with communities most affected by declining #ocean health across Official Development Assistance (ODA) eligible countries. 🌊 OCEAN will be Launching its first call for proposals on 5th February 2024 with funding available through two different pathways: 🔹 Community Grants: Up to £250,000 for small-scale, local, in-country organisations. 🔹 Partnership Grants: From £250,000 up to £3 million for organizations collaborating with locally-led groups to deliver solutions at scale. Projects can run up to 31 March 2029 and must focus on both #protecting, managing, or #restoring the marine environment and reducing #poverty. 🐳 OCEAN is part of the Blue Planet Fund – the UK’s ground-breaking £500 million initiative dedicated to supporting developing countries in protecting the marine environment and reducing poverty. While this might have been a slip of the tongue, it highlights a critical concern: PPPs must not be about exploitation but rather a mutual benefit and solving social issues. In my latest video, I address this misconception. Public-private partnerships are about fostering collaborations where all parties—whether public, private, or nonprofit—contribute and benefit equally. PPPs are designed to uplift communities, create sustainable infrastructure, and drive innovation that serves everyone, not just a select few. Worldwide, Nature For Justice (N4J) leverages nature-based solutions (NbS) to help frontline communities impacted by the climate crisis. As a social justice non-profit, we create #NaturebasedSolutions projects that put communities first. In the US, we work with BIPOC farmers on #regenerativeagriculture, as part of our Farmer Inclusion Program and across Africa, we partner to help smallholder farmers and local landowners engage equitably in global carbon / NbS markets through regenerative agriculture projects. Throughout, we mobilize blended finance for community-determined NbS projects. How can we influence the climate finance ecosystem to build city resilience? Withstanding, preparing, and adapting in a polycrisis era requires us to better understand and navigate risk and channel investment towards resilient projects that support everyone. The SDSN Global Commission for Urban SDG Finance is thrilled to collaborate with the Resilient Cities Network in gathering cities and representatives from the finance, insurance, philanthropic, and knowledge communities at the Bellagio Center.
