While not all overdoses end in death, many do. Do you know what an opioid overdose looks like? Here are 6 things to look for: 1. An extremely pale face that may be clammy to the touch 2. A limp body 3. Blue or purple fingernails or lips 4. Vomiting or gurgling 5. Can't be awakened or can't speak 6. Breathing or heartbeat is slowing or stops If you suspect someone is experiencing an overdose, call 911 and administer naloxone (or Narcan) immediately. Be aware: sometimes it may take more than one dose of naloxone to revive a person who has overdosed! The data shows overdose deaths involving opioids were 81,083 in 2023. That heartbreaking number is actually down by about 3,000 from 2022. Those numbers represent someone’s parent, sibling, child, friend, relative, or significant other. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone that hasn’t been directly impacted by this crisis. Some of my friends are among those numbers. In honoring their deaths and raising awareness, do you support common sense measures to prevent overdose? Do you support your local harm reduction organization? Do you support multiple pathways to recovery? If not, please challenge your belief systems that are no longer compatible with the current opioid crisis. Perhaps they never were. We must be willing to change our stance on this problem as new evidence and information becomes available. #opioidcrisisawareness #opiodoverdoseawareness #opioid #overdoseawarenessday2024 #overdose #opioidcrisis #SubstanceUseDisorder #addictionrecovery #addictionawareness #recoveryispossible #recoveroutloud
