I experienced this first hand the other day, with a meal out. I’d never been to Flat Iron before, but they clearly understand the Peak End Rule. Well, they also know the importance of first impressions; with a tasty bowl of popcorn served up as soon as we sat down. But fast forward to the bill, and accompanying it came some mini cleavers, which turned out to be tokens for free (and really good) ice-cream. Yeah, I remember the highlight - the steak. But that ice-cream finish also stands out, and sure did help shape the way I (positively) remembered the overall experience I had! The lesson for festivals and events? You may not be able to shape and influence everyones peak ‘most intense’ points (the highlights), but you sure can try and do something when the time comes for them to leave. And what with the importance of immediately selling tickets for next year's event to this year's customer, the Peak End Rule is something you need to give some attention to. #Festivals #Events #FestivalMarketing #EventMarketing

Oktoberfest The largest folk festival in the world in Munich Oktoberfest 2024 will take place over 16 days from September 21 to October 6, 2024 on Munich's Theresienwiese. Every year, beers from six Munich breweries and numerous other Bavarian specialties are served in almost 40 festival tents at the world's largest folk festival. Around 15 euros for a pint of beer or a whopping 9.50 euros for Wiesn fries - prices at Munich's Oktoberfest have once again reached record highs in 2024. Nevertheless, the 189th edition of the folk festival on the Theresienwiese still attracts the crowds. More than six million visitors are expected again this year. The Wiesn is a billion-dollar business - and in the middle of it all, the landlords and landladies dominate the spectacle. The fact that their well-optimized business is highly profitable was revealed ten years ago in a tax evasion case: one of the large tents generated a profit of around 2 million euros in 16 Oktoberfest days. Since then, costs have risen, especially for staff and security. The tents themselves also cost money: the months-long assembly, dismantling and storage of the temporary structures alone can add up to well over 2 million euros per tent. Nevertheless, the Wiesn remains good business. Prost!

Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) had several different names during its early years. From 1792-1797 it was called Newark, and during this time it was the first capital of Upper Canada. Due to the town’s proximity to Fort Niagara, across the river in the US, the capital was then moved to York (now Toronto). Many battles took place in the NOTL and the surrounding area during the War of 1812, during which the British and their First Nations allies fought to prevent American expansion into their territory. Fort George was occupied by American forces in 1813, and they burned the town when they left at the end of the year. A few buildings survived, and NOTL was rebuilt after the war. The layout of the Old Town is from that era, and many buildings on Queen Street and the blocks on either side of it have been preserved as homes and businesses. Once a farm town, NOTL’s rise as a cultural center began with the establishment of the Shaw Festival in 1962. It features plays by George Bernard Shaw, other playwrights of his era, and plays set in his era. NOTL is now home to many artists and hosts a variety of festivals from music to food, and of course the wine for which it has become famous. The rich soils of the Niagara region below the Escarpment have long been a fruit-growing area, and NOTL was no exception. Nowadays many of the orchards, which once produced large quantities of peaches, cherries, and plums, have been converted into vineyards for wine grapes. Since the 1970s, the quality of the wine has steadily improved with the introduction of grape varietals more suited to wine-making than eating. The microclimates of the Niagara Peninsula are influenced not only by soil differences, but also by elevation and breezes from Lake Ontario, leading to many distinct terroirs among the many wineries. The “Wiesn”: Locals refer to Oktoberfest as “die Wiesn,” named after the Theresienwiese, the fairgrounds where it takes place. 6. Family Friendly: Despite its reputation for beer, Oktoberfest is family-friendly, with Tuesdays being dedicated as family days, offering discounts for rides and attractions for children. 7. International Impact: Oktoberfest has inspired similar celebrations around the world, with cities like Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada, hosting their own versions of the festival.

I’ll start offering one solution per post. Allow me to address the Number One concern: 💰BUDGET: After 3 decades of performing in hotels, I have observed that if success is measured solely upon the increase in Food and Beverage Sales in order to pay for the band, it is rarely justified by management. However, seen as a whole—as a guest experience amenity and a branding boost—there are few long term, cost-effective investments that can help create repeat business.  I estimate that 20% of guests acknowledge us in the positive while we perform in the lobby or in the restaurant/bar area. Given that our weekly rate is less than a two-night stay during the peak season, doesn’t it make sense to hire musicians if it brings back ONE guest who appreciates something more than canned music? All feedback is welcome! Let’s keep finding the right solutions for your property!
