Two of Illinois’ federal lawmakers want to update national regulations related to lead poisoning. [Health News Illinois] The plan, proposed by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Jesús "Chuy" García, D-Chicago, would require the Department of Housing and Urban Development to use risk assessments for low-income housing built before 1978 before a family moves into the home. The proposal would also create a process for families to relocate on an emergency basis, without penalty or the loss of assistance, if a lead hazard is identified and the landlord fails to address it within 30 days of notification. Landlords would have to disclose the presence of lead if found in the home. Current law requires only a quick visual check for lead hazards in federally assisted housing until a child is already sick, which Garcia said is “too little, too late.” “Our bill will ensure proactive, thorough testing is performed for lead paint hazards in federally assisted housing where children may potentially be exposed,” he said. Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., is sponsoring the bill too. #achieve #blackleadership #latinoleaders #leadexposure #publichealth #socialchange #populationhealth #communityhealth #healthcare #medicine #dental

Access to Emergency Services: A New York City Case Study. Our new study identifies ‘emergency service deserts’ in New York where accessibility to #Fire, #Emergency Medical Services, #Police, and Hospitals are compromised. The results show that while 95% of NYC residents are well-served by emergency services, the residents of Staten Island are disproportionately underserved. The results can be used directly by policymakers to determine which parts of a community would benefit the most from providing new emergency service locations and to quantify the #resilience of emergency service infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/e7M8stUi with Sukhwan Chung, Maksim Kitsak 🇺🇦, Madison Smith, Ph.D. Jeff Cegan Luke Hogewood and Andrew Jin

Harm reduction is public health!!
Please share & show the world that you stand in solidarity with Philly harm reduction & public health. Harm reduction is crucial, life saving work, backed by decades of evidence. When I began this work I had zero intention of growing into an organization. I sat on my stoop in Kensington and offered my friends what little supplies I had. I collected items, stuffed them into my hoopdie and drove around until I was out. What has happened in the years following is something I never imagined. To stand here today in reflection, I am in awe of how the community responded and helped this little mission grow. These past couple weeks have been quite difficult both professionally and personally. But the outpouring of support locally and now globally has been overwhelming. The harm reduction leaders across the country reaching out and offering support, strategy and love has been so comforting. City council isn’t attacking Savage Sisters Recovery, Inc. they are looking to shut down public health and harm reduction orgs across the city. This was made public last week in a news interview. So now, more than ever, we have to stand together and advocate. Harm reduction is public health. #standforhumanity #publichealth #staysavage #harmreduction #harmreductionsaveslives #wedorecover
