Funeral costs are on the rise. Consequently, we see families and loved ones struggling to pay the costs associated with funerals. Many families are turning to crowdfunding to pay the bills. In the area where I live, the cost of direct cremation has increased by 64.5% in last two years. Planning ahead gives us the best chance of minimizing funeral costs. Some of you may know, and many likely don't, that my parents-in-law fund and manage an orphanage in Mozambique; one of the poorest countries in the world. Their non-profit organization, Least of These Ministries, utilizes 100% of donations to fund the orphanage named after my mother-in-law: Rebecca's Home. These donations pay for school for the kids (it isn't free in Mozambique), new clothes, shoes and beds, medical care, job training, staff salaries, building structures like dorms and wells, maintenance and repairs, food, holiday celebrations and anything else the kids need. Currently, there are about 50 children living at Rebecca's Home. Since its start in 2007, hundreds of Mozambique's "least of these" have been helped at Rebecca's Home. Recently, I was asked to make a video using some current pictures sent by Pastor Cebola (he's the man who runs the orphanage locally). Grenfell Tower- what’s your legacy? We have waited a very long time for the Grenfell Tower inquiry phase 2 report, but the wait for the bereaved and survivors has been excruciating.  Grenfell is forgotten in many people’s minds, I've had multiple conversations over the last 12 months, when stakeholders have commented 'what happened at Grenfell was extraordinary’, and that they thought 'Grenfell was finished'. We are far from finished. Grenfell is a story of complete disregard for other human life, a lack of basic humanity for our fellow mankind and those who need us to stand up and protect them. It's the human rights scandal of our lifetime. The right to a safe home, the rights of the children, the rights of the elderly and those most vulnerable.   We left our most vulnerable to perish in the most appalling circumstances. We have left generational trauma that we allowed to happen, and Grenfell Tower stands as a monolith to the failure of those we trusted to keep us safe. So let this legacy be that those working in the housing, construction and fire safety sectors do not view Grenfell as an inconvenience to trade, but as a vocational calling to build better, build safer, build quality, to protect the communities that we live in and for the generations that come after us. Not because we are being made to by regulation, but because we realise that this is the single and greatest action we can make and give to the victims and survivors. The rising costs of dying is a hot topic at the moment when we have a cost of living crisis, even before the end arrives. To add to the conversation around funeral affordability, the landscape trajectory is moving to more direct cremations followed by private D-I-Y memorial type celebration of life services. Having worked at the coal face as a Funeral Director, the brevity of the trajectory had gained momentum. And will continue to grow. Focusing on direct cremation affordability options, in Christchurch, there are 19 Funeral Director service providers offering direct cremations. The cheapest can be $2,200, the dearest is $6,650. A fantastic situation for families to have options. And although the media narrative has pointed part of the rising costs to local council increases, be mindful that all Funeral Directors pass onto families a professional services fee. And this is before they add on other elements such as transfers of the deceased, mortuary care, casket, service sheets, celebrant engagement, venue, live streaming, catering and the like. Unfortunately, when the event arrives, we may not know what options are available. Especially when we are vulnerable navigating a journey surrounding the loss of a loved one. And just to add, the cost of a full service followed by a burial (or cremation) can be approx. $9K to $18K, depending on what elements you incorporate in a funeral/memorial service. I thought I'd share the above that you do have options that are more affordable than others. While the topic is hot.
