In my previous post, I talked about “Why Community Participation is Crucial for Successful Projects.” In this post, I want to discuss “Enhanced Relevance and Effectiveness in Sustainable Community Projects.” From my experience working with community leaders, I have found that involving community members in planning a new clean water supply system has proven to be a game-changer. By ensuring that the services offered align perfectly with the community’s needs, we have seen a significant increase in usage and maintenance. This approach not only guarantees that the system is well-kept but also generates revenues that are reinvested into other community projects. Importantly, this model reduces dependency on external funding, fostering a sense of ownership and sustainability within the community. Please share your experiences and comments below.

Our Chief Director for Puerto Rico, Charlotte Gossett Navarro, discussed how local nonprofits have come to function as “community resiliency hubs” in response to extreme natural disasters brought on by climate change like Hurricanes Maria and Fiona, in a recent article in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, These local nonprofits serve as “one-stop-shops” for essential resources that are often made scarce by these weather events such as medication, clean water, and power. This transformation has been made possible in PR, in part by the numerous solar energy with battery systems installed since Hurricane Maria – including through initiatives like Solar Saves Lives, a previous collaboration between Hispanic Federation and partner organizations, to maximize the resilient rooftop solar energy potential of federally qualified health clinics across Puerto Rico, and dozens of other community solar initiatives funded by Hispanic Federation since 2017. “We can’t deploy solar energy quickly enough to make sure that every single person has consistent energy, [but] if you have a place within a reasonable distance that you can access power, that’s a way for us to address these needs in this transitional period.” Click below to read more: https://lnkd.in/gXn8AwEz

Our approach to community engagement and giving back includes various strategies. For example: 1. **Community Outreach Programs:** We support local initiatives and events to foster community spirit and cohesion. 2.Environmental Stewardship:** We engage in activities that promote sustainability and environmental conservation within the community. 3.Economic Development:** We support local businesses by sourcing materials and services locally whenever possible and creating job opportunities through our projects. This multifaceted approach helps us make a positive impact and build strong relationships with the communities we serve.

What does your byline mean to you?

Excellent ideas and energy at the Land Trust Alliance Rally 2023 underway now in Portland, OR. The focus, grit, and creativity of the staff and volunteer leaders of land conservation nonprofits nationwide is inspiring. Land trusts, public/private cooperation, cross-border strategies, landscape-level planning, and climate adaption are some of the powerful approaches that are reshaping conservation in the U.S. today. Increased public funding is making new progress possible; now, private philanthropy needs to keep pace.
