Cities are always work-in-progress. Buildings are mantained, new are contructed, and existing building are being rehabilitated. It is an ongoing flow of actions of transformations and adjustments. And sometimes street spaces are literally needed as temporary construction sites. Timing is everything, to limit unconvincies for others and to be efficient as possible. And with the reenforcement of exting urban area this will be become more often the reality in many cities. ... the Future Design of Street - association ... PORTO, Oct 2024

Reminder: Many of the best examples of urbanism in America are small towns! Things like vibrant walkable commercial districts, safe streets with slow traffic, centrally-located rail stations, inviting public spaces, and trails and connections to parks and schools are often some of the defining features of Main Street, USA. Let's not lose sight of that! Urbanism isn't a matter of big city vs small town Americana- we all benefit from urban principles applied well in our communities, regardless of scale.

A must watch for anyone interested in the next chapter of the story that is Manchester’s growth and evolution as an international city. The outward expansion of the city centre into its forgotton hinterland presents the opportunity to create green, livable new neighbourhoods, connected into the commercial core. Something regularly pointed out as lacking in Manchester. This opportunity hasn’t really presented itself so far as we have been regenerating whilst working with relatively small landholdings in the traditional city centre in the main. Very difficult to create new ‘places’ and build the infrastructure (green and open spaces in this case) whilst working at that scale. Victoria North, Holt Town etc offer room to breathe by comparison. This is neighbourhood scale place making. The next twenty years look very different to the last twenty.
Introducing Wild Urbanism, a story of City Making & Friendship in Manchester. We are proud to present a Khizr Studio film about a project that holds a special place in our hearts, and that grew from a personal bond with Manchester and with Maccreanor Lavington, our co-directors. More than 20 years after they graduated from the Manchester School of Architecture together, our Partner, Oliver Schulze, and Director of Maccreanor Lavington, kevin logan, were reunited to co-direct the masterplan and to design the first phase of the regeneration of the Red Bank neighbourhood in Manchester’s Victoria North. In unison, they developed the Wild Urbanism approach together with a great team and a confident client: Far East Consortium UK and their Project Director, Hilary Brett. With the integration of the Wild Urbanism scheme, the Red Bank project became a professional milestone of ours. Learn more about Wild Urbanism in the film. Seriously, watch it – it’s amazing. More goodness coming your way, Manchester! #WildUrbanism #Manchester #Masterplanning #UrbanDesign #LandscapeArchitecture

Urban Design is a bridging discipline in complex systems that centres on relationships and partnerships for a liveable world. This message resonated with me at the recent Urban Design Round Table - Shaping Liveable Cities through Urban Design, hosted by Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) on 13 November 2024. Invited speakers Joe Berridge, Wataru Tanaka and Christopher Lee shared their experiences in - A Global Perspective on Designing Better Cities. They also joined as panel in dialogue with Siew Leng Fun and Lay Bee Yap from URA about reimagining urban spaces - Urban Design as a Catalyst for Change Congratulations Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) in celebrating 50 years with 2024 box set publication of 4 guidebooks for Singapore Urban Design - A Distinctive & Delighful City - A Green & Liveable City - A Connected & Inclusive City - From Plans to Reality “Behind every great city is the work of urban design that brings together crucial elements in our streets and buildings to make our experience of the city more comfortable and memorable.“ https://lnkd.in/gVx-F7rY A great reminder in how the planning process of care, green strategies and long standing collaboration work through successful urban design to harmonise context, community, connectivity, culture and creativity in a healthy living breathing urban environment. #urbandesign #liveablecities #green #sustainable #regenerative #relationships #partnerships #care #collaboration #context #community #connectivity #culture #creativity #complexsystems

It is quite recently that a decent, safe, comfortable and attractive walkable streets are not only desired, but also essential for a 'relational city' (Sonia Lavadinho). Good streets form the backbone of our urban living enviroment. ... Here an example of a bot more than a decade ago where everything went wrong ... no 'trottoir'on the right side, a street space designed for cars (driving and parking), an evidence of 'formula one' behavior, an a wide urban landscape that is planned around a car based mobility. ... The challenge is now to image how to improve these spaces. To start is would be good to get out some asphalt and turn it into space for walking and nature. That should be a beginning. ... The green(er) future of Rotterdam Rotterdam is at the forefront of urban innovation, with transformative city projects supported by Gemeente Rotterdam. These projects are designed to make the city more resilient, greener, and healthier, overall creating a sustainable future for all residents. Here’s a breakdown of some of the projects: 💚 Rijnhaven: One of Rotterdam’s most significant waterfront areas will see the development of a mixed-use district with floating buildings, urban parks, green walkways and a city beach. 💚 Hofplein: Rotterdam’s central district is evolving into a dynamic urban hub with a focus on sustainable mobility and energy-efficient buildings. This area will feature green rooftops, improved pedestrian access, and energy-neutral developments. 💚 Hofbogenpark: This project will transform the former Hofplein railway viaduct into the longest rooftop park in the Netherlands. Hofbogen Park will be a green oasis in the heart of the city, providing residents with new recreational spaces while embracing urban biodiversity and climate resilience. ADAPTIVE URBANISM IN A NEW TOWN Almere stands out as an exceptional city for several reasons. It was founded on the site of a drained polder, and its 50-year history of construction and planned development is well-documented. I am visiting this place not only to examine the appearance and functionality of this late modernist structure but also to observe its ongoing transformation. That is why I am starting my journey from the Stadhuispromenade, located in front of the city hall. Until 2019, the area was a square paved with bricks and covered with asphalt, shaded by plane trees. Then, a participatory process was initiated to discuss its reconstruction. Through these consultations, an urban concept emerged, which was subsequently refined technically. Its implementation resulted in the creation of a small park, centered around a winding path. One notable aspect of this area is the network of interconnected shallow terrain basins, designed to collect rainwater. During periods of heavy rainfall, water flows into the lowest points, eventually seeping into the ground. #urbanism #climatechange #urbandesign
