Skate your street. Why not? Steep streets can help to get you from A to B, when the right pavement and size of pedestrian area is guaranteed. Talking about sports in cities, it should be interesting to match this into street design. Like thinking of main running routes into the street network, section design and crossings layout. ... History is stacked with ambitious projects that never materialised. What seems like an inspirational idea in one age can later be interpreted (usually more correctly) as a vanity project, bereft of aesthetic value, economically unviable, and based on the fallacy that a project of sufficiently grand scale will become a legacy for grateful future generations to marvel at. And on a separate topic altogether, what about a new sports stadium on Auckland's waterfront? https://lnkd.in/ggTTm4Qy

It is quite recently that a decent, safe, comfortable and attractive walkable streets are not only desired, but also essential for a 'relational city' (Sonia Lavadinho). Good streets form the backbone of our urban living enviroment. ... Here an example of a bot more than a decade ago where everything went wrong ... no 'trottoir'on the right side, a street space designed for cars (driving and parking), an evidence of 'formula one' behavior, an a wide urban landscape that is planned around a car based mobility. ... The challenge is now to image how to improve these spaces. To start is would be good to get out some asphalt and turn it into space for walking and nature. That should be a beginning. ... 🚨 Architects Back Timber in Mix for $6B Plan to Save Brisbane Olympics! ⏰Brisbane is on a tight timeline to secure a successful 2032 Olympics, and a visionary plan is taking shape at Hamilton Northshore to create a timber-rich Olympic Precinct. This ambitious $6 billion project, fully funded by private investments, aims to enhance the city’s profile while ensuring an unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike. 🗣️ Andrew Colling, Director at HKS, emphasised the importance of this plan, stating, “The need to solve the issues this city faces for the next 20-30 years is bigger than any one company, so we pooled our experts together.” This project aims to create a mixed-use precinct that responds to population growth, incorporating a stadium and residential and commercial spaces. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Sustainable Design: The incorporation of timber in the design reflects a commitment to sustainability, with plans for a 60,000-seat stadium that captures the essence of Southeast Queensland’s natural beauty. The use of timber aligns with global trends towards greener building practices, setting a precedent for future developments. 2️⃣ Community-Centric Approach: Phil Schoutrop from Buchan noted that the goal is to create spaces that resonate with the local community, avoiding generic structures. The project aims to reflect Brisbane’s identity while fostering a sense of community for residents and visitors. 3️⃣ Economic and Cultural Impact: The Olympic Precinct will not only serve as a venue for the Games but will also lay the groundwork for long-term development in the area, including additional residential dwellings and facilities that will benefit the community well beyond 2032. 🏗️ The design team, including renowned firms like Buchan, Nikken Sekkei, and HKS, is committed to creating a unique stadium experience that integrates parkland, timber, and local materials, making it a landmark addition to Brisbane’s skyline. 🔗 To learn more about Brisbane’s innovative approach to the 2032 Olympics and the role of timber in this transformative project, check out the unique feature here: https://lnkd.in/g56pR8Cq 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can integrating sustainable materials like timber redefine urban landscapes for future events? A small revolution in street design is going on in Porto. Rather than betting on large state-of-the-art public space design of streets, more and more small interventions as these crossings do improve safefety, comfort and quality for pedestrians. Not the most beautiful interventions, but relatively cheap and effective. ... Is everything going on the right track? Not yet. We need much more of these acculpunture interventuons. Many crossings to be done. And not everything project is perfect. But a change is going on! ... the Future Design of Street - association ...
