This article from the Wall Street Journal today speaks clearly to the homeowner insurance and condominium crisis so many face in Florida. Far too many are facing insurance cancellations or rates making it impossible to afford their homes. Many cannot sell their homes due to the economy as well as insurance costs.
In a recent debate, my opponent after 6 years in office did not oppose my highlighting her doing NOTHING to help resolve this issue and just avoided answering this critical question. Even worse, proposed no legislation to assist Floridians, but she voted in hast mandating the Reserve Funding requirement for condominiums owners without any consideration of whether it was affordable (or not). Most do not have $20,000, $30,000 or $50,000 liquid and available to satisfy this requirement. Further, insurance rates and increasing taxes annually also impact monthly condo dues and ability to sell.
To be clear, I would not have voted for this Reserve Funding measure unless A.) a 0 interest loan option was included to help those without funds to comply or B.) would have had a much more reasonable timeline to satisfy this requirement.
Yet another example where the people of the 42nd seat of House of Representatives deserve better than what we have now.
We deserve better.
