There is always a reason not to move! Yesterday evening Gideon Krotosky and I were discussing reasons as to why individuals often put their search on hold and delay a move. These include: • "𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯. The above are all (arguably) valid reasons as to why you should stay in a role. However, it can be very easy for time to run away with you; if you keep finding excuses, you may end up becoming too senior to move and/or missing out on a rare opportunity. Sometimes, it is just worth taking the plunge and exploring an opportunity - worst case scenario, you can just say "thanks, but no thanks" after the first initial conversation.

After waiting for over a month and a half following a referral for the DE&I Chief Officer role at VAMC Malcolm Randall, I received an email yesterday with some tough news—no one from the applicant pool was selected. My first job in business was with T. Rowe Price. Well, technically, it was Burlington Coat Factory, but their "Accounting Manager" training program was really about tallying the registers each night. Convincing T. Rowe Price to hire me without a college degree was not easy. And the lack of that credential wasn’t the only challenge I faced. Growing up just a few miles from downtown Baltimore, I came from a family where career conversations simply didn’t happen. Keeping the lights on was the priority. My parents were struggling—sometimes in serious ways, getting arrested, and certainly not serving as role models for a professional path. I had so much to learn in the legitimate world of business, and one of those things was how to dress the part! But I figured it out. In fact, by 1989, I was even selected for a promotional piece (I’m the one with the big ‘80s hair)! When you’re hiring people from non-traditional backgrounds, don’t overlook the fact that they have so much more to figure out than just the job. If they’ve found their way to you, it’s a sign they’ve already proven they can overcome a lot—and they likely have even more to offer. #CareerJourney #NonTraditionalBackgrounds #Resilience #Leadership

A lot of you saw my post from last week about being let go from Indeed, and I have waited a while to expand upon that, as I needed to let the disappointment and anger subside a bit before I told the story. ~3 years ago, I was hired by Indeed to lead a new team, in a brand new department. The reps I would be leading were previous contractors working in a department that was dissolved. They were skeptical about a new Leader from outside of Indeed who didn't have 1/10 of the product knowledge that they did, but I was able to turn them into a unified, happy, and high-performing team. In the 14 quarters that I was there, my team only missed goal 1 time during this uncertain economic climate. I guarantee you it wasn't because of the way I coached to metrics, managed performance, or drove revenue through KPIs. It was because of my Leadership. It was because I understood my reps, knew what they wanted from their lives, and cared about their growth and progression A few weeks ago, we were visited by the EVP of SBS. He requested to have a short meeting with my team, as we were the only team in Austin in our Department. My team asked about a growth plan for the SBS department in Austin because there is a great talent pool and they were interested in leadership opportunities to progress their career. We were told that, as the SBS department had a large footprint in Scottsdale and Stamford already there was no plan to grow SBS in Austin. We could always find positions in other departments or find a role outside of the Company. You could feel the air leave the room. Indeed's North Star is "We Help People Get Jobs". If you are in Austin you have probably seen countless people wearing the signature blue t-shirts. As a Leader, some of my main Values are " I motivate, inspire, grow and develop my people". People over Policy. I believed that my post was living the values I hold for myself, AND the values that Indeed preaches every day. If there were no opportunities for my people at Indeed, it was my responsibility to help them grow and progress The way I measure success has nothing to do with metrics. My North Star is "I Change People's Lives'. If my Leadership has helped you for the better- I encourage you to please comment how on this post. I know who I am as a Leader, why I Lead, and how to get the best from my People. I have 25 years of experience in Sales, BD, AM and CX, with 17 years in Leadership. I have led as few as 3 and as many as 56 ICs at one time. I have worked at small Family-owned Businesses, and some of the largest multi-national Corporations there are. But if I send you my resume- it will drown in the sea of resumes you will receive from so many sources. If you are hiring, and are looking for a Leader who will advocate for his people, question the Status Quo, and Inspire your Company to be its best, let's have lunch or get coffee and have a great conversation.
